Hello everyone, I noticed that the door hinges on my Billy bookshelf have broken. The doors barely close anymore, and it seems like the load was too heavy. My question is: What should be done if the door hinges on a BILLY bookshelf break? Are there replacement parts or repair options available, or is it better to buy completely new hinges? I would also like to know if anyone has experience installing these hinges, as I’m unsure if I can do it myself. Thank you in advance!

It's best to order replacements directly from IKEA or check at a hardware store. The hinges are usually standardized, so you can easily replace them. Install the new ones with a screwdriver; that should work.

I know this problem! 🙂 Just take a deep breath and then get to the screws. Get replacements, fit them, tighten – you’ll definitely manage that easily! If you have a coffee while doing it, it’ll be twice as easy! 😉

I can fully understand how frustrating it is when the hinges break, especially on such an everyday item like the BILLY shelf. I experienced this some time ago as well – my challenge was that I was afraid of causing even more damage while fixing it. But with a steady hand, it worked out in the end. The key is not to apply too much force and to order the correct replacement parts.

To systematically address the issue with broken door hinges on a BILLY shelving unit, I recommend the following approach:

1. First, carefully check which hinges are affected — are they the standard hinges IKEA uses for BILLY, or possibly a different model?
2. If the original screws or fasteners are damaged, always order replacements.
3. To replace the hinges without damaging the door or the cabinet, a good-quality Phillips screwdriver is recommended.
4. After removal, small wood chips or cracks might be visible; you can reinforce these areas with some wood glue and small wooden dowels if necessary.
5. The new hinges should be precisely aligned; otherwise, the door may stick later on.

I’m curious if you have already seen exactly how the hinges broke? That helps assess whether only the hinge itself or also the mounting is damaged.

Thanks in advance for the tips! Regarding your question, @pauPierce: The hinges have torn off at the mounting point, meaning the metal mechanism is partially broken, and on one side the wood screws have also pulled out. I’m afraid the wood in the door frame might be slightly damaged as well. What would be the best way to proceed here? Can I still install new hinges, or do I need to repair the wood somehow? Maybe you need to give me more details on how to properly approach such a repair.
