leahkeHello everyone, I recently noticed that some shelves in my Ikea BILLY bookcase have warped or even slightly cracked. Since I don’t want to replace the entire unit, I’m curious about repair options to restore damaged BILLY shelves to a stable and functional condition. Are there effective DIY methods to improve their strength, or is it better to just buy replacement shelves? I’m also open to tips on how to fix cracks or add reinforcements so the shelves can hold more weight again. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!
I can definitely understand how frustrating this is—BILLY shelves are often used as a base because they are so affordable and practical.
I once had the problem that the shelves sagged, especially under heavy books. What helped me was reinforcing the shelves by attaching thin wooden strips underneath, screwed in the middle. The screws significantly improved the stability.
You can definitely add such reinforcement without having to replace the entire shelf. If the surface cracks, I have also repaired it with wood filler and then refinished it. That has held up well for me and doesn’t look too bad.
I hope this helps a bit—sometimes it’s really worth investing some time in repairs!

Hello leahke, I would like to give you a simple step-by-step guide on how to repair and reinforce damaged BILLY shelves:
1. Inspection: First, check the extent of the damage (cracks, chipped edges, sagging). If there are only small cracks, repairing is sufficient. For significant sagging, you may need complete reinforcement.
2. Repair cracks and chips: Use wood filler and sand it smoothly, then repaint or cover with thin wallpaper for surface protection.
3. Horizontal reinforcement: One of the most effective methods is attaching wooden boards or metal brackets underneath the shelves for support. Screw the additional strip exactly in the center beneath the shelf.
4. Cutting reinforcement strips: For shelves with a 28 mm (1.1 inch) panel thickness, pine strips or plywood strips about 20 mm (0.8 inch) high are suitable. These will strengthen the shelf long-term.
5. Alternative: New shelves: If the damage is too severe, you can reorder shelves from the retailer (often cheaper than a completely new unit). There are also suitable cut-to-size options available at hardware stores with good quality.
Important tip: Avoid placing too much weight in the middle of the shelves and distribute the load as evenly as possible.
Summary: Repair with wood filler + sanding + painting, reinforce with wooden boards or brackets, and if necessary, get replacement shelves. This way, you can cost-effectively and efficiently restore your BILLY shelf.

I really like how many great ideas have already been shared here! 🙂
Just to add a small suggestion: If you want to reinforce the shelves so they are practically 'invisible,' you can also use those flat metal strips commonly used for furniture or drawers. They are slim, easy to install, and still provide solid stability.
That’s exactly how I did it, but additionally, I secured them on the back with metal brackets. You can hardly see them, but they hold really well!
Good luck with the repair – your BILLY will surely be standing strong again soon! ;-)
