Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series and am thinking about how to better customize the pieces to suit individual needs. I’m especially interested in practical or aesthetic improvements that others have made to BRIMNES.
Maybe it’s about additional reinforcements, modifications for more storage space, or clever organization tips for drawers and compartments? Conversions that make the furniture more durable or stylish would also be interesting.
What improvements have others made to Ikea BRIMNES? I look forward to your experiences and ideas.

The material of the BRIMNES series is sensitive to moisture, so treating the visible particleboard surfaces with a special clear lacquer or hard wax oil is advisable. That’s a very interesting tip, thank you. I was actually concerned about durability, especially since the bottom edge of the fronts near me gets some moisture (from wet shoes nearby).
Would you recommend clear lacquer or hard wax oil if you don’t want to change the color appearance? Does anyone have specific product recommendations?
Additionally, I’m wondering if dampers can be installed afterwards easily, even if you’re not very experienced with DIY.

Would you recommend clear varnish or hardwax oil if you don’t want to change the color appearance?I personally prefer clear varnish. It provides a transparent protective layer with high abrasion resistance without significantly altering the surface. Hardwax oil gives the wood a more natural look but tends to become glossier and slightly darkens the color.

Additionally, I’m wondering if dampers can be easily installed afterward, even if you are not very handy.Yes, installing small dampers is generally straightforward. Usually, only a few small screws or adhesive pads are needed. It’s best to check before purchasing a specific model whether the installation instructions are easy to follow for beginners.

Yes, installing the small dampers is usually straightforward. That’s true, I had some from a well-known manufacturer and the good news is: you don’t need any special tools, a screwdriver is enough.
Just a quick little idea for fun:
If you’re feeling adventurous, you could try using magnetic catches to secure doors and drawers or swap them out for decorative handles. Sometimes small extras can work wonders for the feel-good factor at home.
And don’t worry, this isn’t a major renovation – more like a small project that adds a personal touch to any room.
