Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series and am thinking about how to better customize the pieces to suit individual needs. I’m especially interested in practical or aesthetic improvements that others have made to BRIMNES.
Maybe it’s about additional reinforcements, modifications for more storage space, or clever organization tips for drawers and compartments? Conversions that make the furniture more durable or stylish would also be interesting.
What improvements have others made to Ikea BRIMNES? I look forward to your experiences and ideas.

I have also heard about using screw extensions on the cabinet body because the original screws sometimes don’t hold deeply enough. Thanks for the tip, that sounds reasonable. I’m actually not completely sure how strong the fastenings are when storing heavier items in the drawers.

Additionally, I installed small plastic spacers at the bottom of the side panels to ensure minimal air circulation and prevent moisture damage when the furniture is placed in a more humid room.I find this point quite interesting since I have the furniture in the bedroom, where humidity can rise significantly at night. Would you recommend adding spacers to the back as well, or just at the bottom directly on the floor?

Would you also recommend spacers at the back or only at the bottom directly on the floor? In my experience, it is often sufficient to attach small spacers only at the bottom. The back is usually less at risk because it typically rests directly against the wall and therefore absorbs hardly any moisture.
However, if you place the furniture where the wall tends to be damp, it is worth adding some insulation or creating a small gap from the wall.
Hello Brimnes fans!
I would like to share a few small improvement suggestions that, in my opinion, make the furniture more appealing:
- I installed a simple damper (a small rubber buffer) on my sliding doors to ensure they close smoothly and almost silently.
- Another tip: I covered the inside surfaces of the drawers with self-adhesive wood-effect foil, which gives a much more premium look.
- Although not a technical upgrade, adding small adhesive hooks on the sides for bags or hats creates extra storage space with very little effort.
I personally highly recommend such everyday conveniences. Combining functionality with a bit of charm is really enjoyable.

To prevent damage and increase durability, it is advisable to regularly check the screw connections of the BRIMNES furniture and, if necessary, secure them with wood glue or appropriate thread-locking adhesive. The furniture is mainly made of particleboard, which can lead to material fatigue under heavy loads.
A common measure is also to install additional metal brackets at the corners to reinforce the joint between the side panels and the back panel.
Installing extra shelves using standard metal shelf supports can also make the storage space significantly more versatile.

The material of the BRIMNES series is prone to moisture damage, so it is advisable to treat the visible chipboard surfaces with a special clear lacquer or hard wax oil. This increases protection against swelling and minor moisture damage.
In addition, I modified my drawers to be equipped with soft-close hinges. This is certainly a more extensive modification, but the impact on the user experience is significantly positive.
