Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade the doors of my Ikea Besta cabinet with a soft-close feature. Currently, the doors are simple hinged doors without any damping. Since the cabinet is used frequently, I want to enable a smoother, quieter closing without having to replace the entire door or the piece of furniture. My questions: What specific options are there to equip Ikea Besta doors with a soft-close function? Are there retrofit systems that can be combined with the existing fittings? How complex is the installation usually, and do I need to consider certain door widths or materials? I would be very grateful for tips on recommended products or personal experiences with such upgrades.
In summary, there are three main approaches for retrofitting soft-close functionality on Ikea Besta doors:
- Complete replacement of the hinges with soft-close models: optimal in terms of function and durability, but requires precise adjustments.
- Installation of clamp-on or adhesive dampers between the door and the carcass wood: cost-effective but with limitations in comfort and adjustability.
- A combination of both: for example, replacing the hinges and adding extra dampers for especially quiet closing.
It is important to check the door thickness and the hinge mounting hole dimensions before the retrofit. The material (chipboard, MDF, veneer) affects screw fastening. You should also know the door weight, as very large or heavy doors require stronger dampers.

In addition to the previous posts: For a properly functioning soft-close retrofit on Ikea Besta units, it is recommended to check the original installation instructions for the hinges of the furniture. The tolerances for the drill holes are tight, so retrofit hinges from other manufacturers only fit to a limited extent. Ikea’s own or fully compatible products usually offer the best integration. Additionally, damping can be finely adjusted using special adjustment tools and screws, allowing the door to close softly and quietly. The principle of the soft-close mechanism is almost always based on a hydraulic damper within the hinge, which cannot be matched in the same quality by adding adhesive dampers. For a long-lasting solution, I recommend replacing the hinges, as the effort required is reasonably predictable.
