Hello everyone,
I am planning to move an IKEA Hemnes sideboard at home and want to ensure the transport is as safe as possible. Since the piece is mostly made of wood and some fittings don’t seem very sturdy, I’m wondering what to pay special attention to when transporting the IKEA Hemnes.
Specifically, I’m interested in:
- What is the best way to disassemble the furniture if I want to take it apart?
- Which parts are particularly delicate or should be given extra protection?
- Are there any experiences with transporting it in a car trunk versus a van?
- Do you have any tips to avoid scratches or damage during transport?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Wood glue can help if the screw holes start to fray.Exactly! I once used some wood glue and small wooden dowels. Since then, it’s been holding perfectly, even though I often have to assemble and disassemble the cabinet. A little DIY often fixes more than you might expect.
One more tip regarding the back panel: If you prefer not to remove it, you can secure it along the edges with painter’s tape to prevent it from coming loose or breaking during transport.
Also, if you are only partially assembling the furniture to carry it, avoid tightening the screws too much to prevent stressing the materials.

I will probably try to completely disassemble the furniture and pack everything carefully.
One last question: Does anyone have experience with IKEA’s assembly service combined with furniture transport? Is it worth it for Hemnes, or is it better to organize everything independently?

About the assembly service: This can be helpful if disassembly and reassembly are too time-consuming for you. Regarding transport, please note the following:
- Assembly services generally do not cover transport insurance against damage during shipping.
- If you transport yourself, you should disassemble the furniture before transport, as described here.
- The risk of damage is significantly higher if the furniture is transported fully assembled, so disassembly is recommended.
Conclusion: If you handle the transport yourself, the assembly service will assist with installation. However, you are responsible for the transport itself.

Does anyone have experience with IKEA’s assembly service combined with furniture transportation? From my experience: IKEA’s assembly service is professional and can save time, especially if you don’t want to study the instructions or aren’t handy.
However, caution is needed with the transport itself. If the furniture is not properly packaged or protected before the assembly service arrives, it can still get damaged.
Therefore:
- If the service is only for assembly, transport must be carefully arranged beforehand.
- If you hand over transportation completely to professionals, ask about insurance and transport conditions.
So, the service is mainly worthwhile for assembly and installation, but transportation remains your responsibility.
