I would like to start a discussion on the topic: What is the best method to clean heavily soiled Billy shelves from Ikea?

These shelves are usually made of coated wood or particleboard and tend to collect dust, grease, or stubborn stains depending on use and conditions. I am looking for a technique that is effective in removing baked-on or sticky dirt but at the same time does not damage or degrade the surface over time.

Which cleaning products and tools have worked well for you? Are there any home remedies worth trying before resorting to stronger chemical cleaners? And how do you handle regular cleaning compared to deep, intensive cleaning?

I would appreciate specific tips, recommendations, and shared experiences.

I usually use a mild dish soap with warm water and a microfiber cloth. This effectively removes dust and light dirt. For tougher stains, it helps to apply damp cloths for a short time. I avoid using aggressive cleaners.

It’s interesting how often people resort to harsh chemicals, even though simple soapy water is usually enough.

I completely agree. Why damage things unnecessarily?

However, with stubborn dirt, you might almost say: If you get that dirty, don’t be surprised when stronger methods become necessary. 😉

Seriously though, I think cleaning should be approached pragmatically and not made more complicated than it needs to be.

For cleaning heavily soiled Billy shelves, I recommend the following procedure:

1. First, wipe the shelves with a dust cloth to remove loose dirt.

2. For stubborn stains, prepare a solution of about 1 liter (1 quart) of warm water and 1–2 tablespoons of mild dish soap. Wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth or a soft cloth.

3. For greasy or dried-on dirt, apply a small amount of 70% isopropanol to a cloth and gently wipe the area. Caution: Use only a small amount of alcohol, as too much can damage the surface.

4. Under no circumstances use abrasive sponges or harsh solvents such as acetone or paint thinner, as these can damage the melamine resin-coated surface of the shelf.

5. Finally, wipe the surface dry with a clean cloth.

This method prevents material damage while still ensuring effective cleaning.

In addition to ladali's explanations: For particularly stubborn dirt, using vinegar water is also recommended—one part vinegar to three parts water. This solution removes lime deposits and light dirt without harsh chemicals. However, vinegar should be used sparingly and not left on for extended periods to avoid damaging coatings.

For heavy soiling, special furniture cleaning wipes can also be used; they have a conditioning effect and protect the surface.

I think the thing with the Billy shelves is easy to explain: no magic, just a little care and the right products. 🙂

Exactly! And if something sticks, damp cloths are your best friends.

Water and dish soap usually do the job. If something is stuck more firmly, be patient and give it time for the dirt to loosen.

And very important: don’t scrub wildly, or you’ll cause more damage than cleaning. That said: Happy cleaning! 😉
