Hello everyone,

I recently installed some IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with doors. Unfortunately, one thing is quite annoying: the doors squeak when opening and closing.

I have already checked the hinges; they are properly installed and the screws are tight. My first guess is that the squeaking comes from metal-on-metal contact within the hinge.

I am now wondering: what specifically helps to make these squeaking IKEA Metod cabinet doors quiet in the long term? Are there special lubricants, hinge adjustments, or perhaps minor modifications you would recommend?

It should be noted that the IKEA Metod system, with its hinges and flip doors, is technically unique and not comparable to traditional furniture fittings.

I would appreciate it if someone could share their experience or tips here, ideally with recommendations regarding product names, procedures, or alternative solutions. Thank you!

That’s already a very good start, as many issues are caused by loose screws. I completely understand how annoying this squeaking can be, especially when you’ve invested a lot of time and effort into assembling a kitchen.

In my case, I carefully applied silicone spray to the metal parts of the hinge. It’s important to use a lubricant that does not attract dirt or become sticky, so silicone or Teflon-based sprays are better than oil. Then, a little patience while the doors are regularly opened and closed helps the lubricant to spread evenly.

If you like, I can also share how I systematically checked and adjusted everything. Don’t worry, this problem can be fixed!

Silicone spray on the joints usually stops the squeaking.

Do not use oils, as they can become sticky.

Open and close the doors several times afterwards to distribute it evenly.

To permanently fix squeaking in IKEA Metod cabinet doors, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, completely loosen and clean the hinges. Fine dust or manufacturing residues often accumulate, causing friction between the metal parts. I use a lint-free cloth and alcohol for this.
- Then apply a suitable lubricant: silicone spray or a special Teflon spray, as these do not stick or harden. Do not spray the hinges too heavily; the layers should be thin.
- Next, reattach the hinges firmly, while checking the door alignment: the doors should not bind and must move freely. The adjustment screws provided are often designed to regulate position and tension.
- Check if the hinges still move smoothly without causing pressure marks or deformation on the metal. If this happens, it’s better to readjust slightly.

One more question: Are all doors affected or just some? This may indicate a production issue or incorrect installation with certain doors. Also, please share whether the noise occurs more when opening or closing, as this helps with troubleshooting.

This is a very important distinction because the cause and therefore the solution often differ.

To make this even clearer, I will also summarize the basics:

The IKEA Metod hinges usually consist of a metal body with plastic inserts designed to enable smooth operation. When you hear squeaking, it often comes from the moving metal surfaces.

- For individual doors, the plastic insert might be damaged or contaminated.
- If all doors are affected, it could be due to a general installation error, such as screws tightened too much, lack of lubricant, or misaligned doors.

My advice: First, carefully inspect and compare all the doors. A light cleaning and targeted lubrication with silicone spray can also help.

If the squeaking persists, a component may be defective, which IKEA will replace under warranty. How long have your cabinets been installed?
