LucafoHello everyone, I’m planning to convert an Ikea Besta unit into a wine rack and I’m looking for advice on what to consider. I’m especially interested in the following points: How can I adjust the compartments to store bottles securely and stably? Are there specific dimensions I should keep in mind to fit standard wine bottles? I’m also wondering if the thickness and load capacity of the shelves are sufficient or if I need to reinforce them. What have you taken into account regarding moisture, ventilation, and stability? Are there any recommendations or experience with accessories or custom inserts that work well? I want the rack to look as professional as possible and be as durable as it can. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!
I can easily understand how important secure and attractive wine bottle storage is to you. I once converted a Besta shelf myself and initially tested its stability as well.
What helped me was that the shelves are actually designed for books and decorative items, so I would definitely add additional reinforcements to the shelves, for example with metal brackets underneath.
I also noticed that some ventilation is important; otherwise, bottles stored in a completely enclosed shelf could develop moisture problems more quickly. For this reason, I deliberately cut out the back panel and replaced it with a grille.
Have you considered building special inserts to store the bottles at an angle? This is especially important for red wine to keep the cork moist.

Consider the dimensions: Standard wine bottles are approximately 30 cm (12 inches) long and have a diameter of 7–8 cm (3–3.1 inches).
Check load capacity and reinforce shelves accordingly.
Wine bottles should be stored at a slight angle (cork fan).
Do not forget ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.

In summary, I see the key points for converting an Ikea Besta into a wine rack as follows:
- Precise measurements before the conversion, especially the length and diameter of the wine bottles
- Load capacity of the shelves: Ikea Besta shelf supports are designed for about 15 kg (33 lbs) per compartment. Depending on the number and weight of the wine bottles, this limit can be quickly exceeded, so reinforcing with additional brackets or a thicker shelf panel is advisable
- Storage: Wine should ideally be stored horizontally to prevent the cork from drying out. Compartments with fixed inserts can help stabilize the bottles
- Ventilation: To avoid moisture damage and mold, it is recommended to ventilate the rack, for example by using perforated back panels or air vents
- Appearance: Painting or covering to match the interior style, possibly with glass doors for privacy and protection against UV light
Another option is to use wine racks made of wine crates or solid wood as modular inserts in the Besta frame to improve material stability and appearance.

Wow, that sounds really exciting! Converting an Ikea Besta into a wine rack is such a cool idea 😃
I tried it myself, and what helped a lot was using small wooden wedges as bottle holders, adjusted to your measurements. This way, the bottles don’t fall over and it looks very professional!
Also, be sure to pay attention to the back panel – I had a bit of condensation forming because I blocked the ventilation too much. Since then, I cut small ventilation slots, and it’s much better now.
Don’t hesitate, it will definitely turn out great. Let us know how it goes!

Additionally, it is advisable not only to reinforce the shelves but also to check and, if necessary, secure the attachment points of the shelving unit to the wall. This increases stability and prevents tipping, which is especially important for wine racks.
Regarding humidity: to optimize storage conditions, materials without harmful emissions are recommended, as wines can also react to odors. A simple wooden back panel or even a grille is better suited than plastic or MDF with high formaldehyde emissions.
Furthermore, the room temperature should be kept constant and not too high, although this naturally depends on the location.
