Hello everyone, I am planning to build a shoe cabinet using the IKEA Besta system because I really appreciate the storage space and design. However, I have concerns about ventilation, especially since shoes often release moisture, and I want to prevent unpleasant odors or mold from developing. My question is: How can I modify or design the IKEA Besta shoe cabinet to ensure sufficient and effective ventilation? Are there proven methods to adjust the cabinet, for example by adding ventilation slots, special inserts, or arranging the shelves in a certain way? What materials or additional components would you recommend to allow as much air circulation as possible without affecting the overall appearance? I look forward to tips, practical experiences, and also warnings about potential pitfalls in a project like this.

A self-built wooden or metal frame with mesh infill that replaces the back panel is possible if the structure is made sufficiently rigid. The frame was also the key for me. I inserted some foam between the mesh and the furniture board, which provides a bit of sound insulation, but still allows air to flow through.
That all sounds very helpful! Let me summarize: For adequate ventilation in the IKEA BESTA shoe cabinet, I should
- Replace the back panel with a breathable mesh or perforated metal sheet, while ensuring stability (e.g., with brackets or reinforcements).
- Mill ventilation slots on the sides at the top and bottom or install small ventilation grilles.
- Ideally replace the shelves with perforated versions or at least avoid making them completely airtight.
- Leave a small gap between the cabinet and the wall to allow air circulation.
- Regularly ventilate and declutter the shoes to reduce moisture.
Did I miss anything? Or maybe a tip on material choice, especially for the frame of the back panel?

Or maybe a tip on material selection, especially for the frame of the back panel? For the frame, sturdy, lightweight materials such as pine wood or plywood sheets are recommended, with sufficient thickness (at least 15 mm (0.6 inches)) to allow for gluing and screwing the grid. Metal frames are also possible but are generally more complex to work with.
