Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes bed and am very interested in DIY projects that work well with this model.

My idea is to use the Hemnes bed not only as a sleeping place but also to enhance it with custom modifications or additional elements—whether for better storage use, as a multifunctional piece of furniture, or simply to improve its appearance.

I am especially interested in concrete examples that can be done well with the Hemnes bed, such as conversions, additions, or creative modifications that are either fairly easy to carry out at home or that make the most of the furniture through special techniques.

Does anyone know of exciting projects or have experience with this? For example, how have you managed slatted frames, drawers, lighting, or headboard designs on your own?

I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

I simply used the underside of my Hemnes bed to install angled slats, which allows me to raise the mattress slightly. It works well if you prefer to sleep with your head elevated.

I can provide a small DIY tutorial on how to convert the Ikea Hemnes bed into a platform for additional storage – a commonly requested project.

1. Remove the existing slatted frames and check the base area of the bed frame.
2. Build sturdy wooden boxes or sliding containers (e.g., made from plywood) fitting the full length. It is important to choose the height so that the mattress does not end up too high.
3. For visual appeal and stability: additionally use a thin wooden panel as a top layer over the boxes to replace the slatted frame.
4. To keep a modern look, paint everything in the color of the bed frame; white usually matches the Hemnes well.

Tip: Make sure the mattress is properly ventilated to prevent moisture from accumulating in the storage space, and if necessary, install ventilation slots.

This way, you turn the Hemnes bed into a very practical piece of furniture with plenty of storage potential – ideal for smaller bedrooms!

I expanded the drawers under the frame of my Hemnes bed by installing additional rails. It’s important to carefully measure the original rails first and choose alternatives with high load capacity – the Hemnes original drawers are quite sturdy, but their depth is often insufficient.

I also installed LED strips on the inside of the headboard, which I can turn on with a switch on the side. This creates a cozy atmosphere and is practical for reading.

If you’re comfortable with woodworking, you can upholster the headboard by cutting foam and covering it with fabric, then securing it with small nails or a staple gun. This adds a homely touch to the whole bed.

A small tip: when adding extra technology (lighting), pay close attention to cable management to ensure everything is installed neatly and safely, without pinched or visible cables.
