Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Metod kitchen myself soon and have very little experience with furniture assembly, especially with kitchen cabinets. My question is: What assembly tips would you recommend for someone with little experience to make the installation of the IKEA Metod as smooth and safe as possible? Which mistakes should I definitely avoid, and are there any tricks that are not commonly mentioned, especially when working with the built-in cabinets, drawer systems, and wall mounting?

I already have some basic tools but am unsure how to best align and secure the cabinets so that everything fits correctly and stands firmly in the end.

I look forward to your specific tips and advice tailored for beginners – so not too general, but things that really help when doing this for the first time. Thanks in advance!

Hello RORISIN,

Your plan to assemble an IKEA Metod kitchen yourself, even with little experience, is definitely doable if you approach it systematically. Here are some important tips:

- Preparation is crucial: Clear the area completely to have enough space. It’s best to work near a spot free of other furniture.
- Tools: Besides the included assembly kit, a spirit level, a cordless drill with adjustable torque, and a good hammer are very helpful.
- When assembling the carcasses: Work step by step, making sure each screw is properly tightened. Avoid overtightening to prevent damaging the material.
- Pay special attention to wall mounting: Use a drill with appropriate anchors depending on the wall type (concrete or drywall differ) and align the cabinets precisely using the spirit level. Adjusting later is very difficult.
- A small trick: First loosely attach the cabinets to the wall and connect them to each other, then tighten everything finally. This helps avoid misalignments.

Make sure not to overload the cabinets before everything is securely mounted. This way, you can still adjust if something is hanging or stuck.

Good luck!

Hello RORISIN,

I would like to add some more detailed comments to the previous posts, as assembling IKEA Metod cabinets can indeed present a few challenges for beginners. My main tip is to break down the entire process into individual steps before you start.

Here are the key points with details:

- Material inspection: Open all packages and compare the parts to the assembly instructions. It is not uncommon for individual parts to be missing or damaged. This way, you can report any issues early on.

- Tools: Besides a spirit level and cordless drill, you will need a good Phillips screwdriver, possibly a drill depth stop, and a sturdy hammer.

- Wall mounting: Determining the type of wall is crucial. I recommend using special anchors designed for drywall (plasterboard) that can support the weight. For concrete walls, use appropriate heavy-duty anchors.

- Workspace: Set up a stable work surface and use cardboard or blankets on the floor to protect against scratches.

- Cabinet box assembly: Follow the instructions step by step in order. Tighten the screws firmly but not too tight, as chipboard can easily chip. Always check gradually that everything is level and square.

- Wall cabinet installation: The most important aspect is precise alignment using a spirit level and, if necessary, spacers to compensate for uneven walls.

- Drawers and fronts: When fitting, make sure they open smoothly without sticking. Adjustment options on hinges and drawers allow small inaccuracies to be easily corrected.

One question: Will the kitchen be installed in a typical residential room (concrete or drywall), or are there special conditions like uneven walls or floors? This affects the appropriate fastening method.

Good luck, and patience will help a lot!

Great question! I’d like to add to RORISIN’s advice: Don’t be discouraged if things don’t fit perfectly at first! I’m currently installing my first kitchen and found a lot of helpful tips in forums.

If you have little experience, take your time and approach it calmly. Take breaks now and then and find someone who can help with aligning or holding parts in place. Even small helpers can make a big difference!

Also, a tip I personally found very useful: Number the cabinets and parts before you start, so you can assemble them more quickly and avoid confusion.

And don’t forget: The IKEA Metod manual is detailed, but follow it step by step. With the right preparation, this will be a great project that’s a lot of fun!
