Hello everyone, I am currently looking into optimizing my BILLY shelving system, specifically regarding the shelves used. The standard shelves are functional, but I’m wondering about alternatives that might be more durable, stronger, or more aesthetically pleasing. I’m interested in options that remain compatible in width and depth, and are preferably easy to install, as I still want to keep the shelving flexible. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on materials or suppliers that offer better alternatives to the usual BILLY shelves? I am especially interested in versions suitable for higher loads or more specialized uses, such as bookbinding, heavy technical equipment, or decorative purposes. Thank you in advance for your expert opinions and tips!

You can use MDF floors from the hardware store. They are more affordable and usually more durable than standard flooring. Just make sure to check the exact dimensions so they fit properly.

That is correct; MDF boards can be a good alternative because they usually offer higher load-bearing capacity. For processing purposes, they should be at least 18mm (about 0.7 inches) thick to be stable enough and must be protected from moisture, as MDF can be sensitive to it.

Additionally, the use of multiplex plywood panels made from beech or birch is recommended when stability and visual quality are important. These are significantly more durable than standard chipboard shelves and provide an attractive surface but may require additional adjustments for installation.

Another option is custom shelving sets from specialized manufacturers, which often deliver made to measure. These allow better customization but are generally more expensive.

In any case, compatibility with the small support pins (plastic dowels used in BILLY) must be checked. Not all materials come with pre-drilled holes, so some modifications may be necessary.

I completely agree. The functionality of BILLY shelves is often underestimated, especially because of the precise series of drill holes. Simply cutting any wooden or MDF shelf risks making the unit unstable or even impossible to assemble.

An often overlooked alternative is HPL-coated shelves, which allow for easy cleaning and are extremely durable. However, these are less commonly available in standard sizes and usually more expensive.

I would recommend carefully considering whether to rebuild the entire shelf or just replace individual shelves. Sometimes metal shelves make sense as inserts when dealing with heavy loads. With some effort, these can be integrated into an existing BILLY unit.

Are there specific load requirements or design preferences you want to pursue? That would help in choosing the right alternatives.
