Hello, I’m planning to buy a completely new room set soon.
The color of all the furniture, except for the bed, the desk, and the Pax wardrobe doors, will be "whitewashed oak."
So my question is how I should handle the color scheme. I would like to add a stripe in ochre brown, but I’m not sure how wide it should be or if it would match the color of the furniture.
I would appreciate your help with this. Feel free to suggest other nice and warm colors or combinations—I would be very glad.
PS. I should mention that this is a "youth room," I’m 16 years old and male, in case that helps.

IKEA-Experte15 Jan 2012 15:41Hello,
in the end, everything is of course a matter of personal taste.
First, I wonder what color the desk and bed are, and especially what the base tone of the wall is?
Also, what is the thing above the desk?
Were you thinking of a horizontal or vertical stripe? A horizontal stripe would visually lengthen the room, but from the pictures, it looks rather long and narrow to me (I estimate about 4m by 2m (13 ft by 6.5 ft), based on the furniture).
The color could certainly be mixed to match the oak tone, but in my opinion, too much of the same tone and maybe the light brown on a white background might come across as somewhat dull and boring. I would prefer a darker brown for that.
Do you have any overall idea of how you want it to look in the end? Is the stripe just a stripe, or is it intended as part of a larger design?
Have you tried putting two dressers with four drawers side by side instead of the ones with six and three drawers?

Hello,
in the end, everything is a matter of personal taste.
My first questions are: what color are the desk and bed, and above all, what is the base color of the wall?
Also, what is the item above the desk?
Were you thinking of a horizontal or vertical stripe? A horizontal stripe would visually lengthen the room, but from the pictures, it already seems rather long and narrow to me. (I estimate the room to be about 4m (13 feet) by 2m (6.5 feet), judging by the furniture.)
The color could certainly be mixed in a tone matching the oak, but too much of the same tone, plus the light brown on a white background, might look a bit pale and dull in my opinion. I would prefer a darker brown for contrast.
Do you have an overall concept for how you want it to look in the end? Is the stripe just a stripe, or part of a larger design?
Have you tried placing two 4-drawer dressers side by side instead of the 6- and 3-drawer ones? The desk and bed are white.
I want to initially cover the wall completely with white textured wallpaper.
The “item” above the desk is meant to be a mirror.
Yes, I’m thinking more of a horizontal stripe; the room measures 4.3m (14 feet) by 2.4m (8 feet).
Ultimately, it should look warm, inviting, and also modern.

IKEA-Experte17 Jan 2012 21:13Even if the textured wallpaper is to remain white, it still needs to be painted. So applying a colored base tone is not extra work.
There aren’t many options for a horizontal stripe. How about a stripe extending the mirror to both sides?
A second mirror facing the first could create a small optical illusion.
I already suggested dark brown as a color; it’s warm and provides strong contrast.
As an alternative to a horizontal stripe, I thought of a vertical stripe as wide as the desk. This would create a contrast with the white desk.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many people here who engage with these kinds of questions. Usually, the focus is more on technical issues. You might consider writing to Basti the Wohnprinz. He usually enjoys giving advice to a 16-year-old boy who wants to decorate his room.
In any case, please don’t leave us in the dark about how it turns out in the end.

IKEA-Experte18 Jan 2012 20:46Posting colors is a bit difficult because the display varies depending on the monitor and graphics card settings. If you want a brown shade, it’s recommended to mix a few test tones, apply them on a piece of wallpaper, and then evaluate. The most important thing is that you like it.
