Hello everyone, I am currently planning to repaint some IKEA Hemnes furniture and am unsure which types of paint would be best suited for this. I’m not only considering the visual effect but also factors like durability, how well the paint adheres to the wood material, and how easy it is to clean. Based on your experience, which color shades and types of paint (e.g., chalk paint, acrylic lacquer, oil-based paint) would you recommend to achieve a look that is both stylish and practical for everyday use? I am especially interested in how different paints perform on Hemnes furniture that is either dark or white-painted, as some of my pieces are white and others have a darker wood tone. Are there any particular tips for surface preparation and sealing that you would suggest? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Sealing Hemnes furniture with a matte clear coat is also advisable. This provides better protection against scratches and dirt, especially for frequently used drawers or tabletops.

I recommend water-based acrylic paint, especially for light colors. It dries quickly and has a milder odor. Additionally, it is flexible, which helps prevent cracks caused by wood movement.

Thanks for your tips so far! One more question: Does anyone have experience with how dark versus light shades look on the already white-painted Hemnes furniture, especially regarding potentially more noticeable wear marks or visible dust buildup? I want to avoid the furniture looking worn or unkempt quickly, particularly in the living area.

Darker colors tend to show dust and fingerprints more clearly. Light, off-white or cream tones conceal dust better and appear less prone to showing it, but they may reveal stains more readily with direct dirt. Matte finishes are better at minimizing the visibility of wear and tear.

For me, light colors on white Hemnes furniture have stayed fresh for a long time, especially with a matte finish. Dark colors show wear more quickly but look stylish if that’s your preference. Regular dusting helps with both options.
