Hello,

we recently purchased a new-build apartment through a developer and are unsure about choosing the right sliding door for the balcony. Does anyone know the exact advantages and disadvantages of the two types of sliding doors (lift-and-slide vs. parallel sliding door)?

The lift-and-slide door costs about three times as much as a parallel sliding door, and apart from the threshold being only around 2cm (1 inch) high instead of around 7cm (3 inches), the developer hasn’t been able to explain any specific differences. He just mentioned that the mechanism in parallel sliding doors tends to wear out over time. However, I’m fine with replacing the door in 10 years if needed, since that would still save money.

The costs are significant, as we want doors for two balconies. (about 5000€ vs. about 1600€).

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Hello,

Despite the higher cost, we decided to go with a sliding lift-and-slide door because all the terrace/balcony doors that first tilt inward and then slide parallel to the other panel seemed a bit "wobbly" to us. We also heard several times that this design is not as durable.

On the other hand, we know people who have been using such a "wobbly" door without any issues for 15 years – ultimately, in my opinion, it comes down to a gut feeling, like with many things...

Best regards,

Dirk
