ᐅ Treating Wooden Shelving with Wood Preservatives – Is It Worth It?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering whether it makes sense to treat the Billy shelf, which is mainly made of particleboard and some wood, with wood preservatives.

My question is whether such a treatment actually provides better protection against moisture and pests, or if it’s mostly unnecessary—especially when the shelf is kept indoors.

Does anyone have experience with whether the effort is worth it, or if there might be downsides like discoloration or odors from these products?

Thanks a lot for your insights!

Hey everyone! 😄

I find this topic interesting because with Billy shelves, people often underestimate how different the materials can be.

Does that mean that sealing with clear varnish or paint would be a better alternative to wood preservative?

Exactly – if you just want to protect the shelf better, a coat of paint or clear varnish is great. It makes the shelf more resistant to splashes, dust, and minor moisture disturbances.

And the best part: you can do it clear, so the typical Billy look stays intact. 🙂

I once did this on a shelf kept in the basement – and yes, I actually repainted it a few times. That holds up better than wood preservative alone, and the appearance stays fresh.

When it comes to wood preservatives, I always think of my grandmother’s attic where the wood was infested... with particle boards, it’s not as serious, I believe. 😉

So: clear varnish is easy, looks great, protects well, and you can skip the wood preservative unless you’re dealing with solid wood.
