Hello everyone,
I have a specific question about cleaning Malm shelving surfaces, especially those made of wood or veneer from IKEA. I’m particularly interested in which cleaning products you recommend to thoroughly clean the surface without causing discoloration or damage. It would also be great if someone could share tips on how to prevent or remove scratches, as the shelves in my home are used quite heavily.
I would also like to know if you follow any special care routines—such as regular oiling or using certain types of cloths—and what should definitely be avoided, for example harsh cleaners or abrasive materials.
Looking forward to your experiences and advice. Thanks in advance!

Hi funamo and all other finger plaster enthusiasts ;-)
Great topic! When it comes to the Malm shelf (and generally with laminated surfaces), the rule really is: less is more. I usually just take some warm water plus a few drops of dish soap, then a microfiber cloth, and that’s it 🙂
Maybe try household remedies like diluted vinegar? Caution: only very little! Vinegar does have a slightly acidic effect, but when heavily diluted it usually works fine. Plus it gives a fresh scent – which I like 😉
I try to mask scratches by gently polishing with furniture wax or something similar, but if they’re too deep, replacement is the only option :-)
Very important! Those little helpers have saved me from nasty marks many times. Otherwise, yes, don’t scrub too much and avoid frequent wet wiping. Best regards!

Do you have any recommendations for mild cleaners that you can be sure won’t damage the laminate?

Hey everyone,
I find this topic really interesting because I recently struggled with my Malm shelf myself. I completely understand how frustrating it is when small imperfections spoil the overall look. What helped me was a combination of patience and gentle care.
Sometimes I feel stuck between frustration and hope – polishing is nice and all, but when the scratch is deeper, it often feels like just a temporary fix to me.
I know that feeling well! I’ve learned that cleaning too much often causes more harm than good – sometimes it helps to develop a small routine and not panic over every little stain. That makes things easier and less stressful.
Thanks to everyone for your tips – it’s great to see how everyone here shares and supports each other.
