Hello everyone,
I’m looking for tips and proven methods here in the forum to prevent scratches on Malm furniture from IKEA. I recently bought several pieces, mainly dressers and desks, and I’m already noticing some signs of wear in the form of small scratches on the surfaces. Since I care about both the appearance and maintaining the value, I’m wondering which strategies or protective measures have worked best.
For example, I’m interested in whether certain cleaning products, protective films, or specific placement in the room can help. Are there also precautions to take during use, such as using coasters or padding on drawer edges?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello everyone, I would like to share a brief guide on how to prevent scratches on Malm furniture:
1. Use felt pads under vases, lamps, or other decorative items.
2. Protect the surface with transparent adhesive film specially designed for furniture.
3. Avoid dragging or sliding objects across the surface; instead, lift them when moving.
4. Regularly maintain the furniture with a mild, silicone-free furniture cleaner.
5. Use suitable coasters and placemats when eating or working.
Common mistakes include using rough or dirty cleaning cloths, which can cause even small scratches.

Regularly care for the furniture using a mild, silicone-free furniture cleaner. Thanks for the structured summary! I’m interested in whether you can recommend specific brands of furniture cleaners. Also, how often do you usually maintain your Malm furniture?

if you can recommend any specific brands for such furniture cleanersI use a mild all-purpose cleaner from a major drugstore, which is silicone-free and works perfectly for my Malm furniture. I take care of it about once a month, but it also depends on how dirty it gets.
I think the whole scratching issue with Malm is sometimes overrated. Honestly, these are affordable pieces of furniture meant to be used, not handled with kid gloves. It’s better to polish them occasionally or have some minor scratches than to constantly be on guard. After all, you’re not trying to open a museum, right?

I tend to see it this way: a piece of furniture gains character by showing the small marks of time. Still, if you enjoy a well-maintained appearance, I find protective films or felt pads very practical.

reoleon4725 Jul 2022 18:20It's amazing how many people here think about surface care! I always imagine that my furniture stays looking fresh for longer if I use felt pads and clean it gently on a regular basis. That way, the enjoyment of the furniture design lasts! Let's celebrate furniture 🙂
