Hello everyone,

I’m looking for tips and proven methods here in the forum to prevent scratches on Malm furniture from IKEA. I recently bought several pieces, mainly dressers and desks, and I’m already noticing some signs of wear in the form of small scratches on the surfaces. Since I care about both the appearance and maintaining the value, I’m wondering which strategies or protective measures have worked best.

For example, I’m interested in whether certain cleaning products, protective films, or specific placement in the room can help. Are there also precautions to take during use, such as using coasters or padding on drawer edges?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

One more tip: line drawers with rubber or fabric pads. This reduces noise and prevents wear on the edges.

One additional idea is to avoid placing furniture close to doors or passageways, where they are more likely to come into unintended contact with bags or keys.

Absolutely correct, this prevents unnecessary scratches from bumps. Also, when moving furniture, never drag it; always lift it to protect the finish and edges.

Thanks to everyone for the valuable information! I will definitely try felt pads and protective film now, and also pay attention to suitable care products. Using cushions in the drawers also sounds like a good idea.

How do protective films affect the appearance? Do they become noticeable quickly or do they alter the otherwise simple and elegant design?

They work really well – if you use matte, transparent films, they are barely noticeable. I had almost invisible stickers myself, which can only be seen on closer inspection. So, great for the appearance! 🙂

Alternatively, you can apply protective films only to areas that are subject to high wear, such as corners or under vases.
