ᐅ The shelves in the Kallax unit keep sliding out—any solutions?

Hello everyone,
I have an issue with the shelves in my Kallax unit: they constantly slip whenever the unit is loaded or even slightly moved. This means the shelves don’t sit securely and sometimes the stored items even fall off. These are the original Billy shelves, which I installed as replacements for the Kallax ones because they are a bit thinner and easier to obtain.

My question is: Are there any simple and sustainable solutions to permanently prevent the shelves in the Kallax from slipping? I would prefer to avoid complicated or expensive methods, and I don’t want to drill or glue anything, since the unit might be repurposed later. Has anyone had experience with suitable anti-slip materials, special mats, or mechanical aids?

I’m looking forward to your tips and advice!

I know the feeling when floors keep sliding back and forth – it really gets annoying over time.

Exactly! You think you’ve put everything in neatly, yet the floor slides as if it wants to escape. For me, using small, non-permanent rubber pads worked wonders, especially because they can be easily replaced and moved if the arrangement changes. Maybe this could be a solution for you too, so you can use your Kallax flexibly without anything shifting.

I have a critical comment: if you use original BILLY shelves in a Kallax unit, this could mean a suboptimal fit right from the start.

These shelves are not designed for the Kallax compartments and may be thinner or narrower, which leads to frequent slipping. Even the best anti-slip materials only help to a limited extent if the basic dimensions don’t match. From an analytical perspective, I would recommend first measuring the exact dimensions of the Kallax openings and then having shelves custom-cut to fit perfectly — this will save you unnecessary fixes that only mask the problem. Only this way can you ensure long-term stability.
