Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelf from Ikea that unfortunately has some paint chips in several spots. I would like to repair the damaged areas to restore it to its original condition. However, I’m unsure of the best way to proceed to achieve a clean and durable result.

Specifically, I’m looking for a step-by-step guide, starting with properly cleaning the damaged areas, then sanding and preparing them, and finally applying paint or lacquer that matches the original finish as closely as possible.

Are there particular products or techniques recommended for the thin particleboard used in the BILLY shelf? Do I need to observe specific drying times, or can the work be done in multiple stages?

I would greatly appreciate a detailed instruction, preferably including recommendations for materials, tools, and any tips for common pitfalls.

Thank you in advance!

First, gently sand the damaged area with fine-grit sandpaper until the edges are smooth. Then clean the surface with a lint-free cloth to remove dust. Next, apply a suitable touch-up pen or color-matched acrylic paint. Allow it to dry thoroughly between coats, ideally for 12 hours. If necessary, apply several thin layers.

Additional information: It is important to thoroughly degrease the damaged area before painting, for example with isopropyl alcohol. When sanding, make sure to work only on the damaged sections to avoid harming the surrounding original finish.

A fine-grit sandpaper with a grit size of 240 to 320 is recommended. Afterwards, using a touch-up paint pen that matches the color of the BILLY shelf beige is advisable – unfortunately, Ikea does not offer original repair kits for this.

For liquid paint, apply thin layers with a brush, as excess paint tends to dry unevenly.

Wow, great topic! 🙂 I can only say, don’t be afraid of making adjustments – the result will impress you! Just take it step by step and keep going. Have fun painting – a little patience definitely pays off! 🙂 If you’re looking for paint: acrylic paint in small tubes is available at any hardware store, just give it a try!

Thanks for the tip! So 12 hours is really recommended? My schedule is quite tight; is there an alternative if I need to work faster?

Also, how exactly should I handle the transitions between old and newly painted surfaces? Just sand smoothly and hope it won’t be noticeable? Or are there tricks to make this as seamless as possible?

Looking forward to more tips, thanks in advance!

Hi! You can easily smooth the transitions using very fine sandpaper (grit 400 or higher). Work gently to avoid damaging the surface. Then apply a very thin layer of paint on top, and the edges will blend almost magically!

And of course, 12 hours is ideal for drying, but if you need to speed things up, make sure to let the layers dry at least one hour between coats. This way, everything stays stable.

Good luck, don’t stress – it’ll turn out great! 🙂
