Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY shelving unit from IKEA that has unfortunately been damaged by moisture at the lower section. The wood is swelling in some areas, and the shelves are slightly warped. My question is: What is the best way to repair a BILLY shelving unit that has already absorbed moisture?

I am particularly interested in how to treat or replace the damaged parts, which materials are best suited for the repair, and whether there are ways to protect the unit against future moisture without having to replace the entire piece of furniture.

Are there any proven methods or products that can restore the wood’s stability and appearance? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello TUPIN,

I think your post is very well written and clearly describes the situation. To repair the shelf, it is essential to first assess how deep the moisture has penetrated. BILLY shelves are usually made of particle board with a melamine coating, which swells significantly when wet and rarely can be fully restored.

A proven first step is to completely remove all damaged boards. If this isn’t possible, you should sand them down and allow them to dry thoroughly. Note: superficial drying is usually insufficient; controlled, complete drying over several days is important to prevent mold growth.

To protect against future moisture, I recommend treating all cut edges and exposed surfaces with a wood primer or sealing primer. After that, you can repair the areas as needed using acrylic or wood filler. For the shelves themselves, replacing them with waterproof plywood boards cut to size is also a good option.

Important: Make sure the shelf is well ventilated where it is placed and that no new sources of moisture are present.

For surface treatment, clear varnish or weather-resistant paint is suitable to create an additional protective layer.

If you like, feel free to share more details about your specific damage, such as the affected area size and whether the shelf stands directly on the floor.

Exactly, replacement is usually the best solution. If that's not possible, dry the wood and apply a wood preservative primer. Afterwards, you can repair it with filler.

Hello TUPIN,

I would like to add some thoughts and discuss a gentle approach. Especially if the shelf is important to you and you don’t want to replace it entirely, a gradual process is worthwhile:

1. Empty and dry the shelf: Place the shelf in a well-ventilated, warm area. This often takes several days. Simply drying the surface is not enough.

2. Assess damaged parts: Check how deep the swelling goes. Some areas can be smoothed out with fine sandpaper, while other boards are so damaged that they no longer provide support.

3. Repair with wood filler: For smaller damages, you can use high-quality, load-bearing wood filler. After it dries, sand it thoroughly!

4. Protect and seal surfaces: As Palenar already mentioned, a good wood primer is especially important on exposed edges. Afterwards, apply a two-component clear coat or a special waterproof furniture stain to prevent moisture from penetrating.

5. Take preventive measures: If the shelf is located in a moisture-prone environment (bathroom, basement, etc.), keep the humidity as low as possible, for example with dehumidifiers or a good ventilation strategy.

I hope this helps you. If you like, you can describe the surroundings in more detail or let me know your level of DIY skills—then I can also recommend suitable products. 🙂
