Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and would like to protect it from moisture, as it is placed in a room that occasionally becomes somewhat humid. My question is: which varnishes or sealants are generally best suited to adequately protect a Billy bookshelf from moisture? I am especially interested in products that are easy to apply, compatible with the IKEA material (mostly particleboard with a melamine-coated surface), and provide long-lasting protection.

Has anyone had practical experience with specific types of varnishes (e.g., acrylic, polyurethane, clear coatings)? Are preparatory steps such as sanding or priming necessary? What mistakes should definitely be avoided?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello Morereo,

Your question is very well formulated and important, since a Billy shelf is made of particleboard with a melamine coating – meaning the engineered wood material is not very moisture resistant. For moisture protection, polyurethane coatings (PU varnishes) are generally highly recommended because they form a hard, water-repellent yet flexible layer.

Here are a few pointers:

1. Preparation: The surface should be lightly sanded to ensure good adhesion of the coating. If the melamine foil is very smooth, you can gently sand it with fine sandpaper, but be careful not to damage the top layer.

2. Type of coating: Water-based PU clear coats are commonly used today and have low odor. They provide good moisture protection and remain elastic. Alternatively, acrylic paints are easier to apply but often less durable against moisture.

3. Application: Apply thin layers and allow them to dry thoroughly. It’s better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick one. Light sanding between coats is recommended to improve adhesion of the next layer.

4. Edges and back: Make sure to coat the edges and the back as well, as these areas often absorb moisture.

5. Alternatives: If you want to avoid painting, there are also special sealing oils or waxes, but these are usually less resistant to standing moisture.

In summary, a water-based polyurethane clear coat is, in my opinion, the best option to effectively protect your shelf from moisture.

I can only agree with that. It is important to apply the varnish very thinly and evenly. Start by lightly sanding to ensure good adhesion. Usually, more than three coats are not necessary.

Hello Morereo,

I would like to give you a brief guide on how to optimally protect your Billy shelf from moisture step by step.

1. Preparation:
- If possible, remove the shelf from the room or ensure good ventilation.
- Clean the Billy shelf thoroughly, removing any grease.
- For sanding, I recommend fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 220).

2. Sanding:
- Lightly sand the surface so the paint adheres better—pay special attention to edges.
- Do not sand deeply into the melamine coating, just roughen it slightly.

3. Priming:
- Some polyurethane (PU) paints do not require additional primer, but a thin sealing layer such as a wood or plastic primer can help reduce moisture absorption.

4. Painting:
- Apply the water-based polyurethane clear coat with a good brush or foam roller.
- Use thin, even layers.
- Let each layer dry for at least 6–8 hours, preferably overnight.
- Lightly sand between coats with very fine sandpaper (grit 320–400) for optimal adhesion of the next layer.

5. Finishing:
- Also coat all edges and backsides; these areas are often especially vulnerable to moisture.
- Apply at least 2–3 coats of clear coat.

Common mistakes:
- Applying the paint too thickly, which can cause cracking or uneven surfaces.
- Not allowing enough drying time before applying the next layer.

I have been using a water-based PU clear coat from brand X (recommended at hardware stores) for years with my Billy shelves. It keeps the wood looking nice and protected, and the finish ages without yellowing.

If you prefer another option, solvent-based paints are often more diffusion-resistant but have stronger odors and are less environmentally friendly.

I hope this short guide helps you—feel free to ask if you have any questions about specific steps!

You bring up a very important point!

I would like to add that when working with PU coatings, it is essential to ensure proper ventilation. Especially when painting in a smaller room, fumes can build up quickly – this is not only better for health but also helps prevent bubbles or unevenness in the finish.

Also, applying the coating in thin layers will result in a smoother surface. And if something goes wrong, fine sanding usually works very well to fix the surface.

One more tip from me: if your shelf is placed in a somewhat humid room, it might be a good idea to fit the shelf doors with silicone seals – this will help keep moisture out even better.

Good luck with your project! 🙂
