Hello everyone, I am currently working on a project where I want to install Ikea Metod baseboards in a room with underfloor heating. I have some specific questions because I want to do this properly and avoid any damage: What special considerations should be taken into account when installing baseboards of this type on a floor with underfloor heating? Are there any particular mounting materials or techniques that take into account heat transfer or floor expansion? How can you ensure that the baseboard stays securely in place over time without affecting the heating system or the floor? Also, what about expansion joints or allowance for movement, especially along longer walls? I’m looking forward to hearing experiences or tips from professionals and DIYers who have done something similar!

Hello gipau, great question you asked! 👏 Combining Ikea Metod baseboards with underfloor heating is doable but requires a bit of finesse. The most important thing is that the baseboard isn’t too close to the floor to allow for air circulation and proper heat transfer. It’s recommended to use thin spacers so the baseboard is slightly raised. Also, make sure to use flexible mounting clips rather than adhesive or nail methods, which could damage the baseboards due to temperature changes 😊. Don’t worry – with the right technique, it works really well. Leave a little space for expansion joints; I’ve had good experience with that! Good luck and stay motivated!!

I have some reservations about this. If a baseboard is installed raised, I would be concerned about dust and dirt accumulating underneath, especially in a room with underfloor heating where air circulates. Instead, I would prefer very thin, thermally conductive materials that ensure a solid connection to the floor to avoid reducing heating efficiency. The issue of expansion gaps is also important: IKEA Metod uses wood fiber or MDF materials, and thermal expansion can be significant. Has anyone here come across materials or methods that effectively manage these thermal stresses?

For the proper installation of Ikea Metod baseboards with underfloor heating, here are some practical guidelines:

- Baseboards should always have at least a 5 mm (0.2 inch) gap from the floor to allow for thermal expansion and to avoid obstructing the heat output.
- Using mounting clips is recommended to fix the baseboards securely yet flexibly, without directly gluing or nailing them.
- With underfloor heating, it is important that the heat transfer is not blocked by rigid, insulating materials underneath. Therefore, spaced but stable fastenings are optimal.
- Expansion joints at corners or on long walls (from about 5 meters (16 feet)) should be left at around 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) to accommodate material expansion.

I recommend coordinating the Ikea installation instructions for Metod baseboards with those for the underfloor heating system and consulting the manufacturer if necessary. This way, damage and loss of function can be prevented.

Good morning! Since this is a very technical topic, here is a detailed tip on the correct procedure:

1. Preparation: Make sure the underfloor heating is completely cooled down before starting the installation. Reason: The material properties of MDF (used for the Metod baseboards) are sensitive to temperature and moisture.

2. Distance from the floor: Direct contact with the floor is not advisable, as this causes the materials to move, swell, or warp. Therefore, I recommend installing the baseboards using the original IKEA mounting clips, which usually provide a small gap due to the clip height.

3. Heat conduction & air circulation: Baseboards should not seal airtight. Some airflow behind and beneath the baseboard promotes heat dissipation and prevents condensation or mold growth.

4. Expansion joints: For lengths over approximately 4–5 meters (13–16 feet), leave a 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inch) gap in the joints. It is best to use elastic acrylic joint sealant in case the floor expands.

5. Mounting adhesive: Avoid gluing directly onto raw floors or tiles, as the adhesive restricts natural movement.

If you have details about the exact floor structure or specific questions about the clips, feel free to ask!

Baseboards with underfloor heating should not be glued directly or installed without a gap. Use clips from Ikea and leave at least a 5mm (0.2 inch) gap from the floor. Don’t forget expansion joints on longer walls; 2mm (0.08 inch) is sufficient. Done.
