Dear forum members,
We have been living in our new house for three weeks now and feel very comfortable here.
Now the days are getting longer again, and all we see are earth mounds. The driveway has not been done yet either.
We plan to cover the driveway with gravel. The ground underneath has already been compacted. The outlines are set and need to be bordered by a professional.
The boundary around the house will also be made of gravel, about 1 meter wide (3 feet), and will serve as a path.
The garage is already built; the carport is planned on the east side of the house.
Now I would like to gather some ideas. Perhaps some of you have spontaneous suggestions before we finalize our somewhat fixed plans?
-> Wind protection, privacy screening, terrace(s), planting
Attached you will find our 650 sqm (7000 sq ft) plot. North is at the top. Don’t be confused by the dimensions. On the east side, there is about 4.5 meters (15 feet) in width, on the west side about 6 meters (20 feet). On the south side, we have about 13 meters (43 feet).
All marked windows (except those on the north) and the middle one on the east (kitchen) are terrace doors.
We plan several seating areas, for example, a small outdoor sofa and two small granite benches. Of course, there will also be the usual table with six chairs, two loungers, and two metal chairs. We no longer need a children’s swing or similar.
We want a modern feel, but not just boxwood and bamboo. Something a bit more varied is welcome, and I was even thinking about potatoes.
Whether we add a terrace roof depends on the costs; maybe a retractable awning?
I would appreciate it if you could spare a moment to share your thoughts.

Maybe a grandchild later, but there will surely be options then.
First, the foundation needs to be laid, and we probably got too fixated on the garden design since I planned it very early on.
That’s why I’m asking here in the forum. We are open to all ideas.
We are only not allowed to plant evergreen cemetery hedges; otherwise, we are free to choose.
I will soon sketch in a southwest-facing terrace, even though the direct route from the kitchen/stove and refrigerator to the table and grill is on the south or east side.
Here is the current plan:

Maybe move the left section of the terrace to the right?... The two gray rectangles are loungers, which could then be partially overgrown with plants (privacy screen)? This way, you would have a relaxation area in the southwest, a dining area in the south, and a small table among herbs in the east for breakfast...

wadenkneifer12 Feb 2014 21:49Hello,
I wouldn’t place the vegetable garden directly next to the (main) terrace but rather further away. How many square meters have you planned for it? Is it even worthwhile when it comes to growing potatoes? You need quite a few square meters for potatoes to provide more than just one meal.
Otherwise, I really like your plan.
Best regards
Michael

I was thinking about two square meters (22 square feet)?! Otherwise, what’s simple and enjoyable: quince, apple, red currant/blueberry, and then potatoes, carrots, radish, tomato, radishes, zucchini, and pumpkin. Of course, experiments too. I’ve never had a south-facing terrace, so I’m curious how eggplant and bell peppers will turn out.

MichaelThanks, but you’re right: I’m thinking of placing more of the vegetables towards the south end of the garden. The lounge chairs facing southwest in front of the house. Then there would be some open space in the southeast in front of the house, so between the terrace and the vegetable garden.
The question now is: should the layout be rectangular or circular?

wadenkneifer12 Feb 2014 22:05I am definitely a fan of square corners! Looking forward to your new drawing.
No idea how many potatoes you can harvest on average from 2 sq m (21.5 sq ft). We used to have more, significantly more.
