Dear forum members,
We have been living in our new house for three weeks now and feel very comfortable here.
Now the days are getting longer again, and all we see are earth mounds. The driveway has not been done yet either.
We plan to cover the driveway with gravel. The ground underneath has already been compacted. The outlines are set and need to be bordered by a professional.
The boundary around the house will also be made of gravel, about 1 meter wide (3 feet), and will serve as a path.
The garage is already built; the carport is planned on the east side of the house.
Now I would like to gather some ideas. Perhaps some of you have spontaneous suggestions before we finalize our somewhat fixed plans?
-> Wind protection, privacy screening, terrace(s), planting
Attached you will find our 650 sqm (7000 sq ft) plot. North is at the top. Don’t be confused by the dimensions. On the east side, there is about 4.5 meters (15 feet) in width, on the west side about 6 meters (20 feet). On the south side, we have about 13 meters (43 feet).
All marked windows (except those on the north) and the middle one on the east (kitchen) are terrace doors.
We plan several seating areas, for example, a small outdoor sofa and two small granite benches. Of course, there will also be the usual table with six chairs, two loungers, and two metal chairs. We no longer need a children’s swing or similar.
We want a modern feel, but not just boxwood and bamboo. Something a bit more varied is welcome, and I was even thinking about potatoes.
Whether we add a terrace roof depends on the costs; maybe a retractable awning?
I would appreciate it if you could spare a moment to share your thoughts.

Oh, right... I forgot:
The plot is located in a new development area. To the east and west, the two houses are about 10 meters (33 feet) away. To the south, a gravel path is being constructed (a school route for the children). This means that the southern houses (bungalows) are somewhat further away.

So, I understand you want an ornamental garden and a kitchen garden (potatoes…). What about a play area? Space for children to run around? That can take up quite a bit of room quickly.
Do you have a garage and a carport, or are these two different options you have considered?
- I would place the terrace on the southwest corner of the house. What is Room 2? Would it interfere with another terrace?
- Additional seating areas:
-- Behind the garage, combined with part of the ornamental garden
-- In the southwest corner
- Layout:
-- Ornamental garden on the west side from the garage to the terrace (of course, also in front of the garage).
-- Play area in the southwest corner of the property starting from the terrace
-- Herb garden in front of the kitchen on the east side
-- Vegetable garden either as a strip on the south side or on the southeast side.
I would roughly sketch this as a preliminary plan. Then check the local building regulations / planning permissions to see what is required (often something like one or two large shade trees per parking space…) and arrange these elements approximately.
I would shield the south side facing the path with a hedge; it’s far enough from the terrace to avoid shading it.
The east side can be more open; on the terrace side, a privacy screen might be useful.
Best regards,
Michael

Thank you, Michael,
I am quite surprised to see that the room labels (as far as they can be read) are not correct. Northwest is our guest/office/gym room, southwest is the living area, south is the dining area, and southeast is the kitchen.
We have a garage and a carport. The garage is already built, and the driveway was specified in the development plan (building permit / planning permission).
We are using the garden only for older children – meaning for us (over 40 and over 50) and just for ourselves, so it's a utility garden, yes.
Do you have any ideas for large-crowned trees?
Your ideas overlap quite a bit with ours, except for the terrace: We see the main exit on the south/southeast side, possibly a lounge area on the west side or something similar?
How would you separate the utility garden from the ornamental garden?
Should the garden be arranged more square/rectangular or oval/rounded?
Thank you very much,
Yvonne

wadenkneifer12 Feb 2014 21:22Hello,
Expecting grandchildren someday? My parents completely redesigned their garden recently.
Why do you want the terrace on the southeast corner?
Do you need to plant large-crowned trees? If so, there are probably restrictions on what you can or must plant. Then it mainly comes down to personal preference. If allowed and if a productive area is planned anyway, I would choose a fruit tree. Plum, apple, or cherry, depending on your taste.
If the terrace on the south/southeast side is fixed: then naturally place the ornamental garden there as well. The vegetable or productive garden is better suited for the west side. At the front, near the garage, of course also ornamental plants. To separate the areas: a small hedge. Or as a transition, possibly shrubs like gooseberry or currant. Another idea could be espalier fruit trees.
Best regards
