Hello everyone!

So far, I have only moved within the nearby region using a company.
Now I have a move coming up this summer that’s about 600 km (370 miles) away.

What is the best way to search for a moving company? Should I look for one at the destination or at the original location?
How is it usually organized? Does the company load the truck the day before and then drive off early in the morning? Has anyone here done something like this before?
Our last move (40 km / 25 miles) already took almost an entire day (from about 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). If I have to add another 550 km (340 miles) on top of that, will this become a multi-day operation?

When I first moved up here, I barely had any belongings (was a student) and organized the move myself with a van. But now we definitely need a truck, and none of us can drive one.
I’d appreciate your tips and experiences.

Last year, we moved back to Bavaria from East Frisia and hired a moving company from Berlin, which was significantly cheaper than all the local companies we contacted. We were really very satisfied. Am I allowed to mention them here? Sorry, I’m not very familiar with the rules here yet.
By the way, when we moved from Bavaria to East Frisia, we did it ourselves with the help of my parents. Although it was cheaper than using a moving company, even with a police fine (the van was clearly overloaded), it was much more exhausting.

(By the way, I once had contact with you via email, as we wanted to build a house in Westerstede.)

With me? Really? Email or PM? I don’t remember at all. 🙂

I don’t feel confident moving entirely on my own anymore. Although we’ve already decluttered a lot with KonMari, it’s still a fully furnished house with more than 150m2 (1600 sq ft), so it’s definitely not a student’s household. That adds up.
Feel free to send me the company’s details via private message if you don’t want to mention it here (I honestly don’t know if that’s allowed).

Since I don’t have enough posts for private messages yet, I’m sending you an email (WordPress). But yes, after organizing the entire move to East Frisia ourselves, we definitely didn’t want to go through that a second time. My parents were also less motivated, especially since they were the ones who got stopped by the police back then and ended up spending the night in the gas station parking lot.

As always, you can expect everything from zero to one hundred.

When we moved 500 km (310 miles) using myh..., we had great people, all of them craftsmen, and at such a bargain price that we willingly added a little extra. They loaded in the evening, stayed overnight, and then left the next morning with a worn-out truck from a furniture company. There doesn’t seem to be a fixed routine; it’s always decided based on the situation.

It really depends on what you want or, more importantly, what you do NOT want. A so-called professional moving company, in my opinion, is by no means a guarantee of better service; our floor and some furniture were seriously scratched by “professionals” recently, whereas the student group did a perfect job. Often, a group will rent the necessary vehicle themselves.

Local providers will probably be too expensive for you, so I would definitely put your request online through the usual channels and be open to surprises. I have had all kinds of things transported and am always amazed at who moves what and where on our roads these days—with wildly varying prices and services.

In a direct conversation, you might also discover what “how” works for you or whether and what useful services you can contribute yourself. It’s probably like selling a house; you only gradually see how the move will actually take place.

We had also posted a request on a moving service platform back then and additionally contacted local providers. Through the platform, we received two offers of about 2000 euros (one slightly below and one slightly above) and three more offers around 3000 euros. The local providers were all around 4000 euros. We then chose the second cheapest company because, unlike the cheapest one, they only had positive reviews. They arrived on a Sunday morning with three people, and shortly after noon, everything was loaded. On Monday morning, they unloaded everything again here in Bavaria according to our instructions. By midday, they were gone again. We were really surprised at how hassle-free everything went, especially since we had a lot of stuff.

How far was the move back then? We also need to assemble and disassemble a few pieces of furniture (actually just the bed and the bedroom wardrobe) and install and uninstall some lamps.

That’s not a problem if agreed in advance.
Overseas moving containers with disassembled furniture are quickly assembled by professionals.
In Germany, everyone has Ikea furniture,
like in the former East Germany, only the brand changed 😉
so anyone can assemble it.
