ᐅ Long-Distance Domestic Move – How to Find a Moving Company?

Hello everyone!
So far, I have only moved within the nearby region using a company.
Now I have a move coming up this summer that’s about 600 km (370 miles) away.
What is the best way to search for a moving company? Should I look for one at the destination or at the original location?
How is it usually organized? Does the company load the truck the day before and then drive off early in the morning? Has anyone here done something like this before?
Our last move (40 km / 25 miles) already took almost an entire day (from about 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). If I have to add another 550 km (340 miles) on top of that, will this become a multi-day operation?
When I first moved up here, I barely had any belongings (was a student) and organized the move myself with a van. But now we definitely need a truck, and none of us can drive one.
I’d appreciate your tips and experiences.

Are there regional offers included as well?
And if so, from your future or current place of residence?
What exactly did you specify? A complete list of your current belongings? Or a more reduced list?
We have also budgeted 3-4k for the move. It would be nice if it stayed within that range 🙂 I requested quotes through a platform that I’m not allowed to link here, but I found them in an attached image in this thread. 😀 I didn’t know there was an “auction” platform for this. 😉
There weren’t any regional providers included at all. A few weeks ago, I contacted some local movers, but no one seemed very interested in the job, and the few quotes I received were between 5-8k.
I’ve now calculated a worst-case scenario including pretty much everything we still have here. I think it came to about 62 m³ (2192 cubic feet) using their “calculation tool,” but I’m not sure how accurate that is.
Feel free to share more about your experiences 🙂
So far, we have moved three times using a moving company. Twice the employers covered the costs.
The first time was great. They were also a member of this Kangaroo Association (AMÖ?).
Long-distance move – but a small apartment – around 2,000 EUR (about 2,200 USD)
The second time, we only paid for carrying and transporting the large items ourselves – wardrobes, bed, washing machine.
They then argued about whether the hanging chair – disassembled – really counted as a chair or if it should be charged separately.
Local move – around 500 EUR (about 550 USD)
The third time was again a local company. Great reviews on the platforms but not part of any association.
The surveyor was very nice, too.
In the end, the worst company so far.
They didn’t really seem motivated during the move. Our furniture got scratched – not properly protected in the truck – and then they argued for a long time whether this was an insurance claim. They didn’t want to report it to their insurer.
Long-distance move – around 3,300 EUR (about 3,600 USD)

@MaxiFrett .. it would be helpful to also include the year and the actual quantity (in cubic meters instead of "small apartment") for which the respective price was valid. For example, the minimum wage has increased from 8.50 euros in 2015 to 10.45 euros as of July 2022, and even 12 euros as of October 2022. This is likely to have considerable impact in this area.
Correct 🙂
2011 – 50sqm (538 sq ft) – under 20 cubic meters (706 cubic feet) – around 2k EUR
2015 – 70sqm (753 sq ft) – mostly self-built; estimate max. 10 cubic meters (353 cubic feet) – around 500 EUR
2018 – 100sqm (1076 sq ft) – 50-60 cubic meters (1765-2120 cubic feet) – around 3.3k EUR

We moved about 600km (370 miles) a little over two years ago. We wanted to include packing and furniture disassembly because that way you can basically continue living normally until moving day. Since I was already living at the new place during the week due to a new job, having this arrangement was invaluable with kids.
We found the company through one of the auction websites. The price was between $3,000 and $4,000. It wasn’t the cheapest offer, but as it turned out, it maybe was actually too cheap.
The move was an absolute nightmare. Instead of arriving at 8 a.m., they showed up at 3 p.m. There were only three of them for a 110 sqm (1,184 sq ft) apartment. The driver then had to sleep to comply with his driving hours. In the end, two of them worked until 3 a.m. They were doing this only as a side job.
They drove straight to the new place and started unloading in the afternoon again. Completely crazy. Not everything fit, so I had to rent another van.
I can only recommend a reputable local company that can assess the situation beforehand. In the end, we got through it, but it was pure stress.
