Good evening,
today I would like to share some information about moving companies that might help some of you.
Choosing the Right Moving Company – what do you want: cheap or affordable? There are countless furniture movers out there, but one important point should be considered:
Transport companies that use vehicles over 3.5 tons require a license in Germany! A transport insurance is mandatory: basic liability is 620 euros per cubic meter of moving volume. This means that for a moving volume of 50 cubic meters, the liability coverage amounts to 31,000 euros. Damages up to this amount would be covered. Companies that only use small vans with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tons (sometimes called the "Sprinter class") usually do not fall under the regulations of the Goods Transport Act. These companies are therefore generally not required to carry insurance. The liability rules of the law do not apply in this case.
License: if your volume exceeds what fits in a Sprinter van, the moving company must have a license, which reputable movers should always clearly show—on their website, letterhead, etc. Otherwise, steer clear!
In every moving contract, make sure that the total volume of your moving items is clearly stated in the quotation!
I hope this information helps a bit…
Best regards,
Maike.

For me, it will also be happening in a few weeks. This time I felt like [...] taking things into my own hands and organizing everything myself Due to my job, I’ve had to move so often in recent years that I no longer want to handle it all alone. Of course, if money is tight, there’s no other option. But otherwise, I would always hire a moving company. It saves so much stress and time (as long as you have a reputable company), and nowadays that’s worth it to me.
As you get older (and the family gets bigger), there are more and more things involved, so it’s no longer just about carrying 5 boxes and a wardrobe.
Hi, I found the discussion using the search function. I have to move soon, but I have collected a lot of very large and heavy items. Therefore, only a moving company is an option for me. I found a very affordable one, but I am not sure if my belongings will arrive safely with this company. Have you had positive experiences with moving companies that you would like to share?
Hello Nicy14,
based on my experience with moving companies, cheap usually means poor quality. For my first big move, I also went with the cheapest offer (there was simply no more room in the budget). The result: the truck arrived over an hour late, instead of three movers there were only two, and they were completely shocked when they saw the amount of boxes and belongings. Apparently, many items were not even on the loading list, although I had provided a complete inventory beforehand.
Anyway, they weren’t in a hurry and worked at a very slow pace. In the end, we had to carry most of the stuff ourselves because we wanted to finish the move that day. Some damage occurred as well, but we only noticed it later while rearranging the furniture. So you should definitely check all your furniture carefully before paying, to make sure nothing is missing or damaged. Okay, maybe that was an exception in my case, but I’ve heard from many friends that they also had bad experiences with very inexpensive companies.

Since I have relocated several times due to my job, an experience has emerged alongside the points mentioned here.
Moving company prices vary by region. Differences of around 1,000 to 2,000 euros can occur quite easily.
For example, if someone moves from Munich to Leipzig, they naturally look for a moving company in Munich. Due to the wage and price levels as well as demand, prices there tend to be relatively high. However, what prevents the customer from choosing a provider in Leipzig or one located along the route? The distance traveled by the company (unless they have a follow-up job) is the same. Whether it’s from Munich to Leipzig and back or from Leipzig to Munich and back. There can be price differences here that benefit me as a customer.
The only argument against this is that some companies send a moving consultant to the house. This person inspects the belongings and estimates the volume, based on which they then prepare a price quote. This service, of course, cannot be provided by a moving company from a distance.
(This tip does not apply when moving within the same region.)
