Hello everyone!

So far, I have only moved within the nearby region using a company.
Now I have a move coming up this summer that’s about 600 km (370 miles) away.

What is the best way to search for a moving company? Should I look for one at the destination or at the original location?
How is it usually organized? Does the company load the truck the day before and then drive off early in the morning? Has anyone here done something like this before?
Our last move (40 km / 25 miles) already took almost an entire day (from about 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). If I have to add another 550 km (340 miles) on top of that, will this become a multi-day operation?

When I first moved up here, I barely had any belongings (was a student) and organized the move myself with a van. But now we definitely need a truck, and none of us can drive one.
I’d appreciate your tips and experiences.

You can fit quite a lot into two 3.5-ton Sprinters or flatbed trucks (4.2m (13.8 ft) in length). They can be driven with a standard Class B driving license...

Some moving companies also offer volume calculators on their websites. You can input your furniture there, and it will give a recommendation on how large the vehicle should be.

We have also experienced a long-distance move like this. We hired companies from the future residential area because we also needed storage there.

We had to provide a detailed list in advance of everything to be moved, including the dimensions of the furniture. They then calculated the number of vehicles required and sent boxes and packing materials beforehand. We packed everything ourselves. The move took the company three days: they left early in the morning, arrived in the afternoon, and started loading right away. The next day, they emptied the entire house from morning until evening. Due to mandatory rest periods, they stayed overnight and left early the following morning to transport everything to the storage facility upon arrival.

Beforehand, we moved ourselves everything we needed temporarily and did not want to store.

We also sold, gave away, and disposed of a lot of things beforehand. I’m still amazed at how much stuff you can accumulate in a house…

I also find the prices quite high and would try to avoid them if possible.

So far, my brother and I have always handled our own moves. With a driver’s license issued before 1999, you’re allowed to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tons (16,500 lbs) yourself. Possibly adding a longer van like a Sprinter could help move a lot of stuff at once. Weekend rental prices are generally reasonable.

Don’t you have some friends who could help out and perhaps drive a 7.5-ton (16,500 lbs) truck or larger?

Here’s a tip from my wife when moving a lot of furniture: take a photo of each cabinet or shelf section, print the photos, and tape them inside the furniture. This way, even someone unfamiliar can unpack the boxes and place the items correctly. You should have quite a few friends and relatives at your new place, if I remember correctly.

I assume you’ll be making several trips in advance. If you have storage options at the new house or with friends, you could bring a large load with a van like a Sprinter already on one of these trips.

Don’t underestimate the quantities involved. For my mother, this was the “fill” for a 130 m² (1,400 sq ft) house—which is quite full. That required a whole truck convoy: a large truck with a big trailer.
With a van, you can move the contents of a 40 m² (430 sq ft) apartment, but definitely not a whole house...

Best regards,

Andreas

Get quotes from local companies.
They will visit, assess the volume of the truck/Sprinter, the number of boxes, and provide a price.
With this information, you can decide whether to do it yourself or hire someone.
(The companies can also unpack overseas containers and set up the contents—600 km (370 miles) is not a big distance for them.)
