Hi everyone, I have a somewhat unusual question and I’m hoping to get your experiences and tips. My pet uses my IKEA KALLAX like a kind of loft bed – it likes to climb on top of the shelf and sometimes sleeps there. Since I want to avoid damage to the furniture from this, I’m wondering: How do you prevent your pet from causing damage to shelving units when they use them as a retreat or sleeping spot? I’m especially interested in practical protective measures or modifications you’ve made without affecting the design too much. Thanks in advance for your input!

Good luck, and by the way – what kind of pet exactly lived with you there? 🙂Exactly, I would like to know that too! Because a manufacturer like IKEA designs the KALLAX for relatively light use. Depending on whether a dog or a cat is chilling up there, the load and the risk of damage differ significantly.
For cats, I think scratch protection and alternatives are great, while for dogs, stability and load-bearing capacity are essential.
Personally, with my Labrador, I placed a sturdy wooden board on top of the shelf and secured it with screws to prevent slipping and to keep the edges stable.
I think it’s a great idea to use the furniture multifunctionally 🙂
Here, I combined protection and comfort: On top of the KALLAX unit, I placed a folded, non-slip blanket and added a thin, firm rubber pad on top. This greatly improves grip while protecting the surfaces.
That’s exactly what I do too. The advantage is that things are easy to clean if some pet hair or moisture gets on them.
I even attached small anti-slip pads under the shelf – it provides more stability when your pet jumps on it.
A small note: If you fix the shelf to the wall, make sure to mount it properly, otherwise it can tip over quickly.

My tip: Try covering the surface with a washable protective film or a rubber mat.
