PaufarHi everyone, I have a somewhat unusual question and I’m hoping to get your experiences and tips. My pet uses my IKEA KALLAX like a kind of loft bed – it likes to climb on top of the shelf and sometimes sleeps there. Since I want to avoid damage to the furniture from this, I’m wondering: How do you prevent your pet from causing damage to shelving units when they use them as a retreat or sleeping spot? I’m especially interested in practical protective measures or modifications you’ve made without affecting the design too much. Thanks in advance for your input!
I know that all too well – pets and furniture suddenly turning into climbing frames, haha! 🙂
That really shows your pet feels comfortable there. With my cat, I had the problem that her claws easily left scratches on wooden shelves. My tip: try covering the surface with a washable protective film or a rubber mat – this cushions scratches and also gives your pet better grip.
I also once had the idea to cover the top area with a thin foam pad, which I then wrapped in a decorative cover. For extra stability, I fixed the KALLAX shelf to the wall – especially if your pet often jumps up and down, this is important to prevent wobbling or tipping over.
Maybe that’s a good start. I’m curious to hear what others recommend!

Hey, funny scenario – your pet is using a KALLAX as a loft bed? Sounds almost like a new furniture combo 😉
That’s a great idea! I would add that these foam pads also come in different colors, so you can add a small accent to your interior without compromising the look of the KALLAX. I attached a non-slip blanket in a similar way for our dog, which not only protects the furniture but also makes it cozier for the pet.
To minimize scratches and dents, I’ve also tried sturdy, washable vinyl protective mats – they’re easy to clean and quite discreet.
One more thing I noticed: make sure the edges are well secured in case your pet gets too rough, as they could otherwise splinter or break.

FAVALERIE912 Jul 2023 20:06KALLAX is actually not designed to support that much weight on top. I would recommend placing a sturdy wooden board underneath to distribute the load evenly.
In addition, a non-slip mat helps prevent slipping and potential damage. Wall anchoring should not be omitted.

Ah, having a pet certainly makes life more exciting! ;-)
I also rely on soft coverings and carpet pieces, which I secure with double-sided tape to keep everything in place. This not only provides gentle protection for the furniture but also makes the loft bed much more inviting for the furry friend.
Sometimes I create a small climbing or obstacle course around it so the cat prefers playing there rather than directly on the furniture. Maybe offering a play area as an alternative could help?
Good luck, and by the way – what type of pet exactly do you have living with you? 🙂
