Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a set of casters for my IKEA Kallax shelving unit to make it more flexible and mobile. However, I’ve now realized that the casters don’t really support the total weight, especially when the shelf is fully loaded.
I otherwise like the shelving unit very much and don’t really want to switch to a different solution, but it needs to remain stable, and the casters should be able to handle the weight without any issues.
My question is: What alternatives to the current caster set are there that reliably work with higher loads? Are there specific materials, weight capacities, or brands you would recommend? And how have you specifically dealt with this for your Kallax unit if you want it to stay mobile but also carry heavy loads?
I look forward to your experiences and tips!

I had similar issues and was often unsure whether I was simply loading too much weight or if the casters were the problem. The topic of load capacity also concerned me for a long time, and it always helped me to distribute the weight more evenly. The fuller the shelving unit is loaded, the more important a stable caster base becomes.
I equipped my Kallax with heavy-duty casters and additionally installed metal brackets where the casters are screwed in to prevent the screws from pulling out of the wood. Small reinforcements often make a big difference.
Your idea to replace the casters with better ones is definitely the right step. And if you want the shelf to remain mobile, it makes sense to choose especially sturdy casters and to check the overall structure.
