Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit: it stands in a sunny living room, right by the window, and is constantly leaning even though the floor is level. This is especially noticeable because the doors of the boxes don’t close properly, giving the impression that the shelf is warped or unstable. I’m wondering what might be causing this – perhaps the sunlight and a slight deformation due to heat?

Does anyone have tips or experience on how to easily and effectively level a KALLAX shelf that seems to be leaning slightly due to external factors? Are there clever ways to compensate for this without having to take the entire shelf apart?

I’d appreciate any advice, including ideas on how to prevent such deformations in the long term. Thanks in advance!

I would first check the feet and, if necessary, place small furniture gliders or felt pads underneath. If the floor is truly level, the adjustable feet are usually the cause. Otherwise, washers or shims placed under one side can help.

The problem could have several causes, especially related to sunlight exposure. KALLAX is made of particle board with a melamine coating, which can unfortunately warp slightly when exposed to heat. Direct sunlight causes the surface to dry unevenly, leading to minimal swelling or shrinking – this results in the misalignment.

To fix this, I would recommend first checking the floor very carefully, ideally using a spirit level in several places beneath the shelving unit. It’s also a good idea to carefully remove the unit from its position and inspect whether any screws or dowels at the joints are loose. If so, tighten them.

To level it, small wedges or wooden strips can be glued to the lower back side. Flexible pads that stick under the feet can also help to compensate for unevenness without damaging the shelving unit itself.

Important: Since the living room is very sunny, a UV-protective curtain or sun protection film on the windows can help reduce future warping.

Question: Is the shelving fully loaded, or are some compartments empty? Steel sheet or hardboard back panels can sometimes improve stability.

By the way, do you have the option to screw wooden adapters or small furniture feet onto the legs? These often provide more stability than the original plastic glides.

Good morning,

I can certainly understand the frustration. Wood-based materials are very sensitive to moisture and temperature changes—often even a small variation in temperature or humidity is enough to cause some warping.

Have you checked how truly level the floor is, or whether there might be a slight slope? Especially with modern parquet or laminate flooring, the surface may appear level but can have small irregularities that are hard to see with the naked eye.

I also recommend carefully tightening the screws of the shelf again. Sometimes they loosen over time due to load, which can slowly cause it to lean.

If the shelf is leaning, it can also help to support the back panel. There are special metal strips or brackets that can be mounted inside the cabinet to provide extra stability.

As a quick fix, furniture shims have been recommended to me in similar situations—they can even be bought in colors to match or adjusted if needed.

I think with the combination of tightening the screws, adjusting the feet, and possibly reinforcing the back panel, you should be able to get the shelf straight again. 🙂

Great tip! Personally, I once made a small modification to my KALLAX: a thin, flexible foam rubber pad between the shelf board and the base to compensate made a huge difference.

And I’ll tell you: when the sun is beating down and the wood is acting stubborn, place a small fan next to the shelf – gentle air circulation can help distribute the heat more evenly. Sounds odd, but it works surprisingly well! 😉

Sometimes it’s those little tricks that make all the difference. Good luck straightening your KALLAX!

I can understand how annoying that must be. A crooked piece of furniture in your home is immediately noticeable and can cause constant discomfort. I had a similar experience with my shelf, and it took me a while to feel comfortable with it.

Your idea to look for ways to balance it without taking the shelf apart completely makes a lot of sense – it shows you want to keep the shelf. Maybe it would also help to temporarily move the shelf a little further away from the window to reduce the strain from the sunlight. I know that’s not always practical, but it made a difference for me.

How does the shelf feel if you gently push it? Does it wobble, or does it feel generally stable? That can be a good indicator of how urgently a more thorough repair might be needed.

Hang in there, it will get better!
