Hello everyone,
I recently have an IKEA Kallax shelf in my apartment that, unfortunately, developed gray streaks in some areas after prolonged exposure to sunlight. These streaks almost look like the surface is faded or damaged in those spots.
I mainly use the shelf to store books and decorations. The areas with gray streaks are exactly where sunlight hits the shelf directly—not all day, but for several hours.
Now my question is: What cleaning methods or care tips would you recommend to make these gray streaks disappear or at least less noticeable? I definitely don’t want to damage the surface or leave unsightly residues.
Does anyone have experience with this issue? Maybe suitable cleaning products or home remedies? Or is this a case for repairing and repainting?
Thanks for your advice!

These sun-gray streaks sound really frustrating. I had something similar with my shelves, and the feeling that they were changing uncontrollably bothered me for a long time.
What helped me was not only cleaning but also deliberately moving the furniture to reduce sunlight exposure and protecting the surface with occasional care using furniture wax.
That way, at least it doesn’t bother me when I look at it, and I think the shelf develops its own “worn-in” charm over time.
Maybe you could try a combination of gentle cleaning and preventive protection.

Do these streaks become lighter or darker when cleaning? And are they only visually disturbing, or can you feel the change on the surface? Thanks for asking! The streaks don’t actually feel rougher or uneven; they are purely visible as matte, gray lines. When wiping with a damp cloth, the discoloration doesn’t get lighter or darker—it usually stays the same or becomes slightly less noticeable.
They bother me mainly for visual reasons—it looks like the surface has lost color and appears blotchy.
I have now also moved the shelf further away from direct sunlight. If cleaning does improve it, I would prefer to proceed carefully. Thanks also for the tips about furniture oil and polish.

Wiping with a damp cloth does not make the discoloration lighter or darkerThis is a good sign that the gray streaks are truly on the surface and do not represent a deeper material change.
My final tip: If you have already tried cleaning with water and mild dish soap, you can try using a special cleaning sponge (e.g., a melamine sponge, "Magic Eraser"), but only with very light pressure. These sponges often work well on surface stains but can damage the surface if pressed too hard.
In addition, regular maintenance with a furniture care product is advisable, especially to prevent future damage.
I wish you success and hope your shelf looks uniform again soon! 🙂
