Hello everyone, I am currently looking into whether it is possible to install the new KALLAX furniture doors from the latest series onto an existing older generation KALLAX shelving unit. Specifically, I am interested in whether the mounting points and dimensions are compatible or if there are structural differences that would prevent this. My plan is to create a kind of enclosed unit by fitting new doors onto an old shelving unit to improve its appearance and provide dust protection. Perhaps someone here has practical experience with the installation or technical information about the series that could be helpful. Thanks in advance for any advice and tips!

Hello gehugo, your question is very good and valid - it is actually quite common for users to ask about this compatibility issue. Basically, the mounting hardware and doors of the newer KALLAX furniture doors have been slightly modified, so not all new-series doors necessarily fit perfectly on older KALLAX shelving units. The hinge holes and the depth measurements may differ slightly. However, IKEA sometimes offers retrofit kits that allow the doors to be installed nonetheless. If you want to be sure, it’s best to check the exact model number of your shelving unit and compare it with the dimensions of the new doors, which you can find in the product data sheet. In some cases, it is also possible to make adjustments with extra drilling or small wooden strips. 🙂 Hope this helps for now!

Exactly, the most important aspects are really the mounting screws and the hinge dimensions. The newer KALLAX cabinet doors are designed for the current shelf depth of 39 cm (15 inches). Older versions sometimes have a shelf depth of 42 cm (17 inches) – which makes a difference, as the doors may not align flush or close properly.

I recommend holding the doors up as a test before purchasing to check the fit. If possible, compare the door hangers with the existing holes to see if they match. If not, you can adjust with screws and possibly wall plugs, but this requires a close look at the fastening method. However, in general, a complete, precise replacement without modification is often difficult.

Hey, that sounds like an exciting project! 🙂 I recently tried something similar because I wanted to spruce up my old KALLAX shelf. The doors from the new series looked very modern, but as mentioned, the dimensions are a bit different. So, I installed small spacers to prevent the doors from sticking or not closing properly.

My advice: With some patience and a bit of craftsmanship, you can definitely adapt the doors to the old shelf. Simply hanging them up usually doesn’t work without minor adjustments. But the result is great and really makes an impact! So, don’t be discouraged and get to work on those screws. 😉

For anyone interested, here is a brief overview of the procedure if you want to install the new KALLAX cabinet doors on an older shelving unit:

1. Check measurements: Measure the depth of the old shelving and compare it with the new door dimensions.
2. Inspect hinge drillings: Determine whether the existing holes fit or if new ones need to be drilled.
3. Prepare replacement fasteners: Countersunk screws or angle brackets may be suitable to secure the doors if needed.
4. Adjustment: New doors often have adjustable hinges that can be adapted to the thickness of the shelving.
5. Spacers: If the door does not close flush, install small spacers or wooden strips.

Common mistakes include screwing directly without checking all measurements first or using the wrong mounting hardware. I also recommend carefully looking up the model numbers in advance, as IKEA occasionally makes small changes. With precise work, this can be done well. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

This is brilliant—such upgrades are really fun! I can only confirm: even if it doesn’t seem to fit perfectly at first, it’s definitely worth sticking with it :-)

I personally fitted new doors on an older KALLAX and managed to get it perfect with some small modifications. The key is to be patient and carefully align all the mounting points before screwing everything in! After that, the whole piece looks great and feels much higher quality! So just go for it boldly and don’t be discouraged by the small challenges! Good luck!
