Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my kitchen using the Ikea METOD system and am wondering how to properly and permanently install the matching plinths, especially on different types of flooring such as laminate, tiles, and vinyl.

The plinths should not only provide a neat finish but also stay firmly in place over time without loosening or getting damaged. Since the METOD plinths are only supplied with snap or click fittings, I am unsure if this method works well on all common floor types or if additional fastenings are advisable.

Has anyone had experience or tips on the best way to install the METOD plinths—for example, using special adhesives, extra screws, or other materials like mounting tape? How can a clean edge be achieved without risking unsightly gaps or warping?

I look forward to practical advice and recommendations, including tips on preparing the floor before installation.

Thank you!

Hello,

to properly and permanently install the IKEA METOD baseboards, you first need to consider the type of flooring. On smooth floors like tiles or vinyl, it is essential to have a clean, dry, and dust-free surface. Otherwise, neither adhesive nor double-sided mounting tape will hold well.

- For tiles, I recommend using a special mounting adhesive suitable for ceramics, or alternatively a very strong double-sided mounting tape with high load capacity. Screws are generally not recommended for baseboards as they could damage the floor.
- For laminate floors, it is best to use a gentle adhesive solution, such as self-adhesive hook-and-loop tape or mounting tape that can be removed without leaving residue. There is a high risk of damaging the laminate if installed incorrectly.
- The METOD baseboards are designed with a snap-fit system, so it is important that the substructure is perfectly level without any unevenness, as this can cause warping of the baseboard.

For a clean edge, I recommend precisely cutting the baseboard before final installation (flush and straight) and possibly refining it with fine sandpaper or an edge deburring tool to improve the fit.

In summary:

- Clean and prepare the floor thoroughly
- Choose mounting adhesive or strong mounting tape suitable for the floor type
- Cut and fix the baseboards precisely

This way, you will achieve a clean and durable result without damaging the floor.

Exactly. That is the foundation for any adhesive solution.

I would also recommend edge profiles if the baseboard is not flush against the surface.

The baseboards should not only look good visually, but also remain securely attached and undamaged over time.

This is an important point. Especially with different types of flooring, installing the METOD baseboards is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

I recommend the following approach:

- First, check that your floor is level and clean so the baseboards don’t have to “move.” Unevenness can cause the boards to bend or come loose.

- For vinyl or tile floors, a high-quality construction adhesive works very well. Alternatively, a double-sided mounting tape specifically designed for perimeter fixing can be used.

- Be careful with laminate floors, as moisture or adhesive residue can cause issues. In this case, using the original METOD clips is best. These are screwed onto the substructure, and then the baseboard clicks into place — this is the cleanest and most durable method.

- If you don’t want to use screws in the floor, a thin silicone bead behind the baseboard is a good option. This compensates for small unevenness and provides protection.

- For especially clean corner joints and finishes, I recommend precise measuring and cutting with a miter saw in advance, so the joints fit tightly and flush.

I hope these tips help you achieve a stable and visually appealing baseboard installation.
