Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Malm chest of drawers set, and I noticed that the drawers don’t close flush with the furniture but stick out slightly. I read that the drawer slides might be the reason the drawers move inward when pulled. My question is: How do I properly adjust the drawer slides on the Malm chest so that the drawers close neatly and sit flush within the cabinet? Are there any specific installation tips I should keep in mind? I have already tried some adjustments, but the result is not yet ideal. Thanks for your experience and advice!

I have already tried tinkering a bit, but the result is still not optimal.Random tinkering can often do more harm than good 🙂 I would first loosen all the screws, realign the rails, and carefully check their position with the right tools before tightening any individual screws. If the rails allow for adjustment, make sure to use the adjustment screws. As fidasi already mentioned, precision is key here. If you don’t have a level available, a straight edge at least 40cm (16 inches) long will also work.
loKurt,
I would like to explain the importance of the types of drawer slides: Malm models often use what are called full-extension slides. These require precise horizontal alignment between the upper and lower parts of the slide. A commonly underestimated point is that the drawer sides must be positioned exactly not only in height but also laterally on the slides to allow the drawer to close smoothly.
From a technical perspective, you should also check whether the screw holes in the cabinet body are worn out, as this can cause misalignment. Ideally, you would follow these steps:
1. Remove the slides.
2. Inspect all the drilled holes.
3. Apply wood glue and, if necessary, insert new dowels if the holes are worn.
4. Realign carefully with precise adjustment.
A simple square bracket can help ensure right-angle mounting.
I’m happy to provide step-by-step instructions if you post the measurements or details of the slides here.
