Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

I have neighbors here who spent well into six figures...

What I like about it: The money doesn’t just sit in an account, but changes owners.

That's fine, everyone has their own preferences and wishes. I was just really surprised that someone could spend that much money on a kitchen...

The unnecessary part is that at some point, spending more no longer increases the kitchen's functionality. You can have great appliances and attractive, high-quality surfaces that feel great to the touch. But eventually, you reach a point where there is no additional benefit, except for having spent more money. You could even decorate a toilet with diamonds, but it would still just be a toilet.

Refrigerator 15,000 euros. Countertop 25,000 euros. Some kind of natural stone from the other side of the world, probably very rare. Of course, you only know that if the owner mentions it (and he does), otherwise only a specialist might be able to tell, if at all.

Yes, it’s fine, really fine, if you are wealthy and can afford something like that.
But the quoted sentence above is unfortunately true. We used to call something like that “Count Coal from the Gasworks.” Because true nobility does not show off; that’s what Trumps and Geisens and the like do. K.

Anyone who feels the need to show off with a rare natural stone probably has other issues.

You might get that impression, but I think it’s an oversimplification.

It’s all relative, after all. A nurse with a brand-new Dacia might also be proud of her achievement and eager to share it with everyone. Someone who can’t afford a car at all might find that arrogant or excessive. Who knows. I would consider myself upper-middle class, but for example, I have no interest in cars. I don’t understand why someone would spend 50,000€ (about 54,000 USD) on a BMW that ultimately just gets you from point A to point B. Sure, it’s a nice car, comfortable, good materials, more power than my old car. If I had 50,000€ (about 54,000 USD) to spare, there are other things I would think of instead of buying a car. But then again, some people already have everything they need. Especially older people, in my experience. Or they have so much money that the price simply doesn’t matter. They always go for the best because why settle for less.

@matte1987 : Thank you for your quick response.
The warming drawer will primarily be used to bring dishes to the right temperature and occasionally to keep them warm.
Cooking with friends is simply a lot of fun!

Does he use the kitchen for cooking or just to get the champagne out? It won’t get any better chilled, a 1500-liter (53 cubic feet) fridge would do just as well.

Six figures... If I had that kind of money, my dishwasher would be bigger and I would have more vegetable garden space.

Bigger vegetable garden, larger greenhouse, second freezer, and a root cellar for storage.
