Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought and assembled a white-painted KALLAX shelf from IKEA. Since then, I have noticed that the white paint looks noticeably yellowed in some spots, especially near windows—where sunlight shines directly through when I open the window. Now I am wondering if this is a common reaction to UV rays or humidity, or if it could possibly be a manufacturing defect.

Has anyone experienced yellowing of the white paint on the KALLAX shelf, particularly after airing out or opening windows? How severe was it for you, and do you have any tips on how to prevent or reduce this discoloration? I suspect that the material or the paint layer might play a role, but I would appreciate it if someone could share concrete experiences or solutions.

Thanks in advance!

In addition to the previous answers, I would like to point out that the melamine coating or the lacquer used on KALLAX shelving units is not specifically formulated for UV resistance. This means that natural aging due to sunlight and air exposure cannot be avoided.

An effective measure can be the installation of UV protection films on the affected windows. These significantly reduce sunlight exposure and help protect furniture surfaces in the long term.

Another possible option is the use of furniture care products containing UV filters, which can offer some protection to the lacquer. However, their effectiveness is limited.

It is important with all measures to follow the care instructions provided by IKEA to avoid damaging any materials.

I’m curious if anyone has already tested the effect using a simple protective measure like a UV blocker.

Good question. So far, I have actually placed the shelf by the window without any UV protection. However, I have now ordered a thin UV protection film to apply to my window in order to test exactly this effect.

If the film makes a difference, I will definitely report back here. Up to now, I have only cleaned the shelf with water and a mild microfiber cloth to avoid any material damage.

Thank you all for your helpful contributions so far; they have really helped me move forward.

Apply UV protection film to windows to avoid direct sunlight. This is the most effective solution. Yellowing is caused by plastic aging.
