Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought and assembled a white-painted KALLAX shelf from IKEA. Since then, I have noticed that the white paint looks noticeably yellowed in some spots, especially near windows—where sunlight shines directly through when I open the window. Now I am wondering if this is a common reaction to UV rays or humidity, or if it could possibly be a manufacturing defect.

Has anyone experienced yellowing of the white paint on the KALLAX shelf, particularly after airing out or opening windows? How severe was it for you, and do you have any tips on how to prevent or reduce this discoloration? I suspect that the material or the paint layer might play a role, but I would appreciate it if someone could share concrete experiences or solutions.

Thanks in advance!

Hey LABULU,

it’s great that you brought up this topic! 🙂 I had exactly the same issue with my KALLAX when I placed it near a window. The color did actually turn slightly yellowish in certain areas after a few weeks. I believe this is caused by exposure to UV light and possibly moisture.

What helped me was slightly moving the shelf away from the window, and this made a big difference. You can also try cleaning the surface regularly with a mild cleaner (without harsh chemicals!).

Keep at it—there are sure to be other tips here. Let’s see what the experts have to say! Good luck! 🙂

I recommend not placing the shelf directly in sunlight and regularly wiping it with a damp cloth. Yellowing occurs in white plastic due to UV rays.

The yellowing effect on white painted furniture such as the KALLAX shelf can be caused by several factors:

1. UV radiation: Long-term exposure on the window side accelerates yellowing in certain plastics and coatings.

2. Humidity: Fluctuations can promote chemical reactions that lead to discoloration.

3. Material composition: IKEA mainly uses melamine-coated chipboard – the coating can age if stored or used improperly.

As a preventive measure, I recommend combining the shelf with UV-protection films on the window or allowing indirect light exposure. Additionally, cleaning with mild soap and avoiding solvents is advisable. A general manufacturing defect is unlikely; this is due to physical and chemical processes.

That sounds reasonable, but do you have any evidence or practical experience showing that direct sunlight alone is responsible?

UV radiation and humidity promote yellowing in melamine-coated particle boards.

I find that a more plausible explanation. I’m curious if anyone has tested the effect using a simple protective measure like a UV blocker. The cause might also lie in the type of coating formula, as some can be sensitive to light and oxidation – and there are occasionally quality variations in IKEA products depending on the production batch.

Experimental feedback would be helpful to better understand this issue.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with the yellowing KALLAX! I completely understand how frustrating that can be, especially when you’re aiming for a clean white look. I had a similar issue with another piece of furniture, and it took a few weeks until I set up proper light protection on the window.

The discoloration wasn’t severe but was noticeable, and I also felt like the smell of the material changed slightly – it does go away eventually, but I couldn’t fully confirm that.

If anyone has more ideas on how to perfectly prevent this or possibly fix it afterward, I’d be glad to hear them! Keep at it, LABULU, you’ll get it figured out for sure.
