Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA, which I actually find very practical, but I notice that this shelf constantly gets dusty. No matter how often I wipe it down, after just a few days there is a visible layer of dust on the shelves or inside the compartments.

My question to you is: What are your best cleaning tips or methods to keep the KALLAX shelf as dust-free and clean as possible? Do you use any special products or techniques to prevent or minimize dust? Tips on how often to clean would also be great. Thanks in advance!

Hello elbasan30,

to bring some structure to the cleaning process, here is my brief guide:

1. Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment: Before damp cleaning, it is important to remove loose dust carefully with a vacuum.

2. Antistatic cloths: These reduce the surface’s static attraction. If not available, a slightly damp, lint-free microfiber cloth also works.

3. Mild cleaning agents: Use only solutions with a neutral pH to avoid damaging the surface finish.

4. Regularly clean the back panel and socket areas: These are often overlooked but can cause dust clouds.

5. Reduce dust collectors: Having fewer textiles (carpets, curtains) nearby significantly lowers the amount of dust in the air.

Additionally: A small ionizer device can reduce airborne dust if dust is a major issue.

I hope this overview is helpful. If you like, I can also provide recommendations for suitable products.

Can you say a bit more about your indoor climate? For example, whether you have pets, many plants, or how well the room is ventilated?

Good question – I actually don’t have any pets, but I do have a large room with a window that I ventilate daily, especially in the morning and evening for about 15-30 minutes each time. I only have a few small plants.

I suspect that the ventilation and the plants (or their soil) cause dust from the window and the air to collect on the shelves, acting like a kind of trap.

Thanks anyway for the detailed advice. I will look for antistatic cloths and give them a try.

On dust accumulation with KALLAX shelves: These are made of melamine resin-coated wood fiber boards, which attract dust particles due to their electrostatic charge.

Cleaning recommendations:
1. Dry dust removal using antistatic cloths or microfiber cloths.
2. Avoid excessive moisture, as it can damage the coating over time.
3. Use special antistatic sprays, available at furniture or electronics stores, to reduce future dust buildup.

Regular cleaning is necessary, ideally at least once a week, depending on room conditions.

Additionally helpful: If possible, use a vacuum cleaner with a suitable attachment to remove dust before wiping.

That sounds very reasonable, especially the advice about moisture – I was considering using a slightly damp cloth, but I’m worried about damaging the surface.

Could someone please clarify how damp a cloth should be at most and how long a damp cloth can be used before it becomes too harsh?

Ideally, the microfiber cloth should be only slightly damp—often described as “damp, not wet.” This means it should not drip but just lightly moisten the surface.

Regarding duration: it’s best to use the cloth immediately after dampening, as dust and dirt can accumulate over time. You may want to rinse the cloth periodically to avoid redistributing dirt onto the shelf.

Additionally, wipe the surface again with a dry cloth afterwards to remove any remaining moisture and prevent a residue or film.

I swear by antistatic cloths, which you can get for electronics or cars. They really attract dust, making it easier to wipe off next time. They are available in both disposable and reusable versions.
