Hello everyone,
I installed an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with the standard shelves, but I noticed that some of the shelves have developed a slight warp. I suspect this might be due to the material or moisture exposure.
My main question is: Does anyone have experience with the so-called "steaming" method – that is, intentionally moistening wood or wood-based panels with damp steam to restore the shape or correct the bend of the shelves?
Specifically, is this technique suitable and practical for KALLAX shelves, or could it cause more harm than good?
Maybe someone also knows alternative methods to flatten these slightly warped shelves.
Looking forward to your advice!

"Steam treatment is not a recommended method"Exactly, that’s why I would advise against it.
Particleboard and similar engineered wood products react sensitively to moisture and heat.
Moreover, the shelves of KALLAX are relatively thin and are not solid wood boards that could be steamed to straighten.
As an alternative, you can try storing the shelves flat on a level surface in a heated room and weigh them down, as already mentioned.
Controlling the humidity can also help; in general, the room should not be too humid, as this can increase warping.
If it doesn’t improve at all, order replacement shelves—then your effort and expense won’t be wasted.

"Dry bending under heavy load for several days is more reliable."I completely agree – nothing straightens a shelf board better than patience and a pile of books! 😉
In practice, it’s unfortunate when shelves warp, but with a few tricks, you can often save a lot:
1. Flip the board: Sometimes applying counter-pressure against the warp helps.
2. Consider the indoor climate: Lower humidity increases stability.
3. Small boards might benefit from some sunlight, but never wet them!
I would only use steam if you’re up for a little adventure 🙂 But normally, it doesn’t add much value. Good luck!
