Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing an issue with my IKEA Kallax shelving unit. Despite assembling it correctly and fastening all screws properly, the unit still wobbles. I really made sure to tighten all screws according to the instructions and followed the assembly guide precisely. What puzzles me most is that the wobbling seems to come from the corner of the shelf where everything appears to be quite sturdy.

My question to the community is: What could cause this wobbling even though the screws are tightened correctly? Could it be related to how the unit is fixed to the wall, inaccuracies when drilling the holes, or might manufacturing tolerances in the material itself cause this instability?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice, especially if you have dealt with a similarly wobbly Kallax despite “correct” assembly and how you resolved the issue.

Despite correct installation and proper screwing, the shelf unfortunately still wobbles.

I find it interesting that many immediately assume "incorrect installation" here. But maybe the problem isn’t there—instead, it could be the design itself. Kallax isn’t really made for heavy-duty loads or high stability under dynamic stress.

The thickness of the particleboard and the length of the screws are often underestimated—they are actually designed only for moderate loads, so even very precise screwing won’t help much.

My advice: instead of just checking how tight the screws are, also examine the floor condition. An uneven floor or a small bump under one corner can make a shelf unstable, even if all screws are tightened securely. That causes the whole structure to wobble.

Is the shelf possibly raised slightly off the floor by a carpet or something similar? That can have a significant impact.

Good question, Baugi69! I’ve put together a small troubleshooting guide that often helps with these Kallax wobbling issues:

1. Check the alignment: Use a level to see if the shelf is really standing straight. Slight tilts can cause wobbling.

2. Uneven floor: As karlau already mentioned, small floor irregularities are a common cause. Just a small gap under one corner is often enough.

3. Check the screws: Even if you think the screws are properly seated, make sure all screws are tightened at the correct angle. Sometimes screws in plywood or particleboard can loosen easily if the material is porous.

4. Wall attachment: Kallax units are basically freestanding, but if you place it against the wall, attaching it to the wall (for example, with angle brackets) can significantly improve stability.

5. Material defects or deformations: It’s possible the shelf got slightly warped during storage or transport. This deformation can cause the base not to sit flat.

Summary: So carefully check the floor, alignment, and screw angles. An additional wall attachment often provides the desired stability.

Check if all screws are fully tightened. Sometimes they are only lightly fastened but still appear stable.

Also, make sure the adjustable feet are properly set or not missing. Some models come with adjustable feet for uneven floors.

Hi Baugi69,

I once had a Kallax that wobbled a bit despite being assembled “correctly” – which is really annoying when you want the shelf to be sturdy. For me, the issue was that one corner of the shelf was slightly off the floor. After attaching small felt pads to the bottom corners, the problem was completely resolved – it basically stabilized the shelf and compensated for the slight unevenness of the floor. A simple but helpful trick 🙂

Hello Baugi69,

your description sounds like you did everything correctly, but the wobbling still persists. There are two common causes for this:

First, the metal fittings or wall plugs might be loose in the wall when you mounted the shelf. This can cause the entire unit to wobble.

Second, even if the screws are in place, the panels at the connection points are often slightly warped, which is common with Kallax units. This affects the distribution of forces and stability.

A tip: try tightening the screws again after one week. Wood and materials often settle during the first load cycle.

Your idea about material tolerances playing a role is absolutely correct. IKEA produces in series, so although the tolerances are small, they do have an effect. A wobbly Kallax usually means that one component is not lying completely flat or the angles are not exactly 90°.
