Good morning everyone, I am currently facing a small issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. Unfortunately, the shelf compartments are designed so that larger lever-arch files (for example, the XXL size, which is often 8cm (3 inches) wide and 31cm (12 inches) high) don’t fit easily, especially when standing them upright. I’m looking for ideas on how to adapt or modify the KALLAX so that large files can be stored neatly and securely inside. Simply laying the files flat is not an ideal solution, as it becomes hard to organize and wastes space. Does anyone have practical suggestions, perhaps involving additional elements, size adjustments, or alternative organization tips? I look forward to your advice and experiences!

This is brilliant, so many helpful ideas here! 🙂 I just used these sturdy fabric storage boxes in my KALLAX shelves, and they fit files perfectly while keeping everything neatly organized. By the way, you can also customize the boxes with labels and dividers, which makes organizing really enjoyable!

Hello, if the standard KALLAX compartments don’t fit, it can also help to take some time for DIY solutions. A self-made wooden frame that fits snugly into the compartment and slightly raises or holds the files in place can work wonders. Just use thin plywood sheets and some sandpaper. Alternatively, inexpensive storage boxes that fit exactly underneath can also be useful. Patience is key here, feel free to try different options. 🙂

Regarding the KALLAX modification for large file folders, I recommend the following approach:

1. First, determine the exact internal dimensions of the compartment.
2. Then, have suitable inserts made from wood or plastic, or purchase them.
3. Ensure stability, for example, with clamps or snap-fit connections.

Common mistakes include inserts that are too wide or too tall, which could damage the compartment. It is important that the files stand firmly to prevent tipping or slipping.

If the compartment is too narrow to store large files upright, you can also use two smaller compartments: store the files horizontally in one box and create space next to it for other documents. This way, you continue to make optimal use of the shelf depth.

One option is to insert a wooden wedge or a better-fitting insert shelf into the KALLAX shelf unit

Thanks, that sounds promising. How would you recommend securing such an insert without damaging the KALLAX?

Are there simple clamping alternatives that don’t leave marks? I’d like to keep the shelf as original as possible.

Do you have any experience with self-adhesive or magnetic mounts? I’m a bit unsure if they hold well.
