LutzriGood morning everyone, I am currently facing a small issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. Unfortunately, the shelf compartments are designed so that larger lever-arch files (for example, the XXL size, which is often 8cm (3 inches) wide and 31cm (12 inches) high) don’t fit easily, especially when standing them upright. I’m looking for ideas on how to adapt or modify the KALLAX so that large files can be stored neatly and securely inside. Simply laying the files flat is not an ideal solution, as it becomes hard to organize and wastes space. Does anyone have practical suggestions, perhaps involving additional elements, size adjustments, or alternative organization tips? I look forward to your advice and experiences!
I can understand how frustrating that can be. My large files also don’t fit well into the KALLAX, and I searched for a solution for a long time. Sometimes it helps to combine the shelving unit with boxes or file holders that keep the files upright. Maybe that could be an option for you? It’s important to keep things organized without having to search constantly.
For adapting large binders to KALLAX, I can recommend the following:
1. Take measurements: Check the exact internal dimensions of the compartments and compare them with your binders.
2. Use shelves: Additional shelves can help organize the space.
3. Use accessories: KALLAX-certified boxes or dividers from the IKEA range fit perfectly.
4. External solutions: Metal supports or adjustable file holders provide flexibility.
It is important that the binders stand firmly to ensure optimal use of the storage space.

1. Take measurements: Check the exact internal dimensions of the compartments and compare them with your files. I did that: The internal height of a KALLAX compartment is about 33 cm (13 inches), the height of the XXL files is around 31 cm (12 inches) – so they should fit. However, the width, often around 33 cm (13 inches), is missing, and that’s exactly why they don’t fit upright, since the front is usually 34 cm (13.5 inches) wide. A precise adjustment of the width would therefore be necessary.

One option is to install a wooden wedge or a better-fitting insert shelf in the KALLAX shelving compartment to hold the files securely. Especially an adjustable-height insert or custom shelves cut slightly higher or wider can be very helpful. Additionally, hooks or brackets can be attached inside the compartment to keep the files firmly in place.
