ᐅ Have any of your Kallax doors warped after painting?

Hello everyone, I recently painted some doors of my Kallax units to give them a new look. Now I've noticed that some doors warped after painting, so they no longer close properly or get stuck. My question to you: Have you had similar experiences with Kallax doors warping after painting? If so, what do you think causes it exactly? Do you use specific types of paint or preparation methods to prevent warping? I would like to understand how to avoid this problem, as I do use primer, sanding between coats, and apply thin layers of paint, but apparently, that is not always enough. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Always lay the doors flat to dry and do not leave them hanging in the air!

There’s some truth to that—who wants an architect just for a door? 😉

Joking aside, warping is really a matter of patience. A quick wood balance by painting both sides and drying the door flat works best. I think a project like this should be enjoyable—just imagine your doors gaining character! But of course, paint them evenly flat and then wait; that way, the result stays stable.

Thank you, so I see two main factors: painting both sides with as even a coat thickness as possible and drying flat. I didn’t consistently do that last time, which likely caused my warping.

I have one more question: Some recommend sanding the doors before any other work. How much should you sand to lightly roughen the surface without damaging the coating too much? I often wondered whether I was being too rough or too gentle.

That’s an important question. Generally, for melamine-coated or laminated Kallax doors, light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) is sufficient to slightly roughen the surface and improve paint adhesion. Sanding too aggressively would damage the surface and could lead to uneven paint absorption.

It’s best to sand evenly and with light pressure to avoid creating unnecessary dust or damaging the surface. After sanding, clean the surface with a dust-free cloth so the paint can adhere without obstacles.

Also, a tip: if you are using water-based paints, make sure the surface is completely dry after sanding, because any residual moisture can promote warping.

I have been painting Kallax doors for years: sand with 240 grit, paint both sides, apply thin coats, done. Warping has never occurred for me.

If you don't want to paint the inside, you can apply a thin protective coating instead. This helps keep the tension low.

I see it the same way: as thin as possible and painted on both sides. The doors for Kallax are usually about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) thick, which is not very sturdy, so balanced treatment is important.
