Hello everyone, I have a specific question and hope to get your opinion: From your experience, is it really worth getting a professional cleaning for stained KALLAX doors from IKEA?

I have noticed that some of my white KALLAX doors have unpleasant stains and discolorations that cannot be removed with regular cleaning. I’m wondering if a professional cleaning—meaning by specialized providers using specific cleaning methods—can significantly restore the furniture to a better condition, or if the effect is rather limited and it might be better to consider replacing the doors instead.

Do you have any experience or recommendations? What actual benefits does professional cleaning offer for such furniture/wood doors, and do you perhaps have any cost-benefit tips? Thanks in advance for your input!

Hello Danbi,

your question is very specific and sensible! Professional cleaning can be quite effective for stained KALLAX doors, especially if the stains are caused by grease, dirt, or stubborn everyday contaminants.

Professional cleaning companies often use specialized solvents and cleaning methods tailored to the furniture type – something that is rarely achieved with household remedies. However, it is important that the door material (probably lacquered particleboard or MDF) is not damaged, as aggressive agents can harm the surface.

Sometimes cleaning only makes sense if the stains have not penetrated too deeply or the furniture is not already too badly damaged. Otherwise, cleaning can become expensive and show little effect. A good tip is to get advice beforehand and possibly have small test areas cleaned first.

Regarding the cost-benefit ratio: professional cleaning is often cheaper than buying new furniture if the pieces are otherwise in good condition.

What type of stains do you have exactly? That could help narrow down the answer a bit.

Hi Danbi! 😎

I think it depends on how much you invest in the furniture and how much you care about it. Sometimes these stains are so stubborn that you could almost sell them as artwork 😂. But seriously: a "professional cleaning" can work wonders – of course, if the results don’t improve, you’ve paid more than necessary.

The advantage is that professionals often have cleaning products and equipment that you wouldn’t have lying around at home. They also know how to handle things carefully to avoid damage.

However, if the doors are already very yellowed or damaged, it might be a waste of money. Then it’s better to just replace them; new doors really aren’t that expensive.

In any case: freshly cleaned furniture is more enjoyable, and if professionals do it, you save time. 😉

I would say: If the stains are superficial, a specialized cleaning product from a furniture store or home improvement center is usually sufficient.

Professional cleaning only makes sense for deep or oily stains.

Otherwise, you can simply replace the doors, which is not expensive with KALLAX.

Thanks for asking! The stains are mostly dark discolorations, probably from fingerprints or possibly traces of coffee or food. They aren’t very deep, more surface-level, but can’t be removed completely with regular household cleaners. The surface is glossy/varnished and quite delicate. That’s why I’m concerned that harsh cleaners might do more harm than good.

Hello Danbi,

I agree with GiRoyce: If the surface is glossy or lacquered, you should definitely be careful. Professionals often use special, gentle cleaning solutions and have experience with these types of surfaces.

A drawback of DIY is that you can quickly apply too much pressure or use the wrong product, which can cause dull spots or scratches. Investing in professional cleaning can be worthwhile to preserve the original appearance.

Sometimes a combination of a thorough cleaning by professionals followed by maintenance with protective coatings provides a very good overall result. The cost for this typically ranges between 50 and 100 euros per door, depending on the company and scope of work, but often the results justify the price.

However, if the doors are very badly damaged, it is better to consider replacement in the long term.
