Hello everyone,

I am planning to replace the doors of my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit because I no longer like the standard models over time and would prefer a more personalized and, above all, more affordable alternative. My specific question is: What options are there to renew the KALLAX doors inexpensively and independently from IKEA? I am interested in both do-it-yourself solutions and ready-made products from third-party suppliers that are well compatible. Tips on affordable materials or sources would also be great.

I have some DIY skills, so creative solutions involving self-construction or upcycling are also of interest. I understand that mounting the doors and fixing them in place is not always straightforward, so I am open to any advice on installation.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

HPL is significantly heavier than simple MDF boards

That’s true, and I would add: If weight is an issue, you can build sandwich constructions instead of solid panels. For example, a thin HPL outer layer, a lightweight honeycomb core or thin MDF board as the core, and a back panel. This significantly reduces the weight while maintaining the appearance.

Additionally, you can achieve good finishes using self-adhesive films and paints, which fit well in spaces like KALLAX units.

Since you mentioned you have DIY skills: If you use a cutting service at home improvement stores, you can have the panels cut to size right away. Then all that’s left is final assembly and surface treatment.

My doors are 33.5 x 35.5 cm (W x H). The hinges are metal clip-on types recessed into the cabinet, as is common with IKEA.

Thanks for the measurements, that’s very helpful. Doors measuring 33.5 x 35.5 cm (W x H) usually fit the standard KALLAX size.

A precise approach:

- Use 10–12 mm (0.4–0.5 inch) MDF as the base panel.
- For HPL (high-pressure laminate), you can use directly laminated material, which is typically 0.8 to 1 mm (0.03 to 0.04 inch) thick and glued on.
- If the hinge drill pattern needs adjustment, I recommend using a template or transferring the hinge hole positions from the IKEA door to the new one.

In terms of weight, expect about 2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lbs) per door. If your shelving unit is stable, this should not be an issue.

One more tip: the hinges are sensitive to door thickness. Ideally, keep the total door thickness at 16 mm (0.63 inch) or less.

Can you remove the doors on site and measure the hinges exactly as a reference? That would make manufacturing easier.

Hey, I know how frustrating it can be when you feel like your apartment loses character because of standard furniture. A while ago, I replaced my KALLAX doors myself – using simple wooden panels from the hardware store, which I painted white.

The price was very reasonable, and I was really happy with the result.

If you sometimes worry whether the doors will hold up or look good, I can tell you from experience: DIY projects don’t necessarily have to look homemade if you work carefully. Just take your time and maybe get a little help with the installation.

Other than that: Good luck, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you make of it! 🙂

Regarding affordable door replacement: I tried using suitable hinges from third-party suppliers directly. There are sets available online that are not based on IKEA specifications and can be adapted to thinner custom-made doors.

This saves money on materials while also allowing the use of doors in standard sizes.

One tip if you go this route: Make sure the hinges are of good quality; cheap hinges can become stiff or warp after a short time.

I used simple plywood sheets to keep the weight down. I just cut them to fit the KALLAX dimensions and mounted them with the original IKEA hinges.

The entire door was painted, which ensures long-lasting durability. It’s low cost and looks good.

Mounting is very easy with the IKEA system, so I definitely recommend it.
